My 5 1/2 and 3 year old kids love playing online games. I don't love them playing on my computer.

So...I'd like to get them one, but would like to spend as little as possible.

It seems like most weeks you can find new PC desktop systems w/monitor for a little over $300 in the circulars, but even these have much more than we need for simple gaming, and I'd like to spend less. Used is fine, as long as I don't have to tinker with it too much, as I am not experienced in upgrading hardware components.

Any suggestions on what might fit our needs/where to find it would be appreciated. Thanks

Pretty much anything will do, but you have to make a money/time tradeoff. If you buy used, you will probably have to tinker, at least a little. If you buy new, you won't, at least in theory.

There are some really excellent mouse/keyboard sets designed specifically for children.

My advice would be to purchase new, preferably something that has at least a 1 year support warranty. I just can't see you saving enough money to make it worthwhile, if you were to buy used.

The mouse/keyboard thing will make a HUGE difference to the kids.

So I took out the 5 1/2 year old iMac that I was ready to give away.

Works okay, but has apple os 9 and IE 5.0. Lots of the web games don't seem to work. Is it possible to upgrade the browser to something that will work? Suggestions?

We bought a used older iMac for our kids (who are older than yours, but not yet teenagers). It was upgraded to OS10. It's fine for browsing and some simple games, which in my view is fine. It is not great for newer games with good graphics. You can buy old mac games on ebay. I've bought a few and they work fine. There are lots of people on this board who use macs and can give you great advice.

Don't just install OS X on it, if you don't upgrade the firmware first you will most likely end up with a MacAquarium.
Firmware Version 1.2, for the early tray loading iMacs (233 – 333 MHz)
Firmware Version 4.1.9, for the slot loading iMacs & DVD drive iMacs.

Everything you need can be found here, http://www.apple.com/support/imac/g3/
print out the instructions and follow them exactly.
