I have an old Dell PC that I want to get rid of. I think it is a P3, with a 20 gig hard drive. Any ideas? |

If you live in Maplewood (or have an obliging friend who does), put it out on the curb at the next bulk pickup. It is almost certain to be scavenged way before the WM trucks arrive.

Monster- I have a PS/1 my friend just took the hard drives out of for me to get the data off (it wouldn't boot). Do you want it? Heck I'd even give the hard drives to you if you tell me how to erase them A friend told me to just bring them in the room with me when I have MRI's done Wed and Thur. Says everything will be erased. |

I recommend against using bulk pickup. The county has a special day for recycling electronics. And there is lots of lead in monitors, so please don't send them out in the garbage.

However you decide to get rid of your computer, make sure you remove your hard drive. There's a wealth of info on those puppies... |

Tom, I agree that it shouldn't go into the "regular" garbage. The reason I suggested bulk pickup is that someone is almost certain to take it BEFORE it gets put into the waste stream. Computers seem to be one of the hot items for the scavengers. I just always like to know that someone else is getting use of something rather than it just going into the garbage. If, by some chance, it was still there at the end of the evening, you could always bring it back inside and hold on to it for the special disposal day you mentioned, but I just think that there is very little chance that would happen. |
