My computer now has so much software installed that there are 30+ processes (when I run Windows Task Manager) and I think that is what is causing my computer to slow down. Is there any way to determine which ones I need, and how to eliminate them from automatically starting? |

Yes, google the names of the processes and learn what they are for. Some oddly-named things are essential parts of Windows. Some are not. Some are spyware. Some are add-ons. And take the Google desktop off, if you have it. It would be mighty useful if it didn't slow the computer down so much. You may want to try a registry cleanup tool. Adding software adds complexity to the registry. Removing software doesn't clean the registry very well.

You can read the forums at www.majorgeeks.com for a start. Deleting things from the registry can be a tad touchy, so be careful. |

Go here: AnswersThatWork.com, then select Task List. You will be able to find all Windows processes and some third-party software processes (such as Symantec AV, etc). For all others, you will have to do as Tom said. |

Download Process Explorer from Sysinternals, it will show you the running proccesses, and who they are from in most cases, it gives yo a lot more info too. |

Before you disable anything, make sure you get rid of all spyware/adware/crapware. Run Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. They can be downloaded free from Download.com. Do you know which ones you want to disable? You need to indentify the ones that you dont need first. Some of them can be disabled from CONTROL PANEL, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, SERVICES. Right click on the service that you want to disable and select PROPERTIES. Then, for startup type, select MANUAL, then click OK. You won't find all the processes that are running in your task bar in here, since some of them are probably run from the RUN registry key.

Listen to the man, don't just go disabling things, some of them Windows can't do without. |

You can also download hijackthis, and post the log file it generates to http://hjt.iamnotageek.com If you decide to disable something, you can also use msconfig (from the Run... box). You can uncheck something, and it will not be removed from the list - it will simply be disabled. You could also post the log here, and I'm sure lots of people will fall over themselves to be the first to answer. Geeks are like that...
