I've been experiencing a boot up or lack thereof problem on my laptop. After starting the computer, it appears to get to the 'desktop', but nothing is accessible. The only option I have is to turn off the computer and re-start. Most times, I'm foreced to do this at least several times. This is a one year old Dell laptop, running XP Home with Norton System Works 2006 installed. I've searched the Symantec site but cannot find anything to address this problem. Just yesterday, I had a similar experience with my new Dell Desktop, this running XP Pro with Norton System Works 2006. It seems to be, though I have no way of checking this, is that this problem occurs if the 'Norton Go Back' program starts to open prior to me entering my password to finish my log on. Any ideas are appreciated.

Does it work when you boot in safe mode? (boot up and hit F8) I have seen a similar problem on a laptop where the trackpad was dying, but the keyboard worked. Have you tried hitting the windows button to see if the start menu comes up?

It doesn't happen when I boot up in Safe Mode, but when I re-boot from there, it may or may not happen. I don't believe it's the trackpad of the keyboard, since nothing works, and I even use an external USB mouse, most of the time.

Its hard to comment without being in front of the computer... but if you think the problem may be Norton related, try booting into safe mode and deleting Norton (assuming you own the disc and can re-install, of course). Once Norton is gone, reboot normally and see what happens. If your computer is functioning normally you've isolated a Norton issue; if not, Norton is probably not to blame. I've run Systemworks in the past (as have many other people!) with no problems... just curious, what makes you think its a Norton issue?

If it doesn't happen in safe mode it's definitely not a hardware problem. I won't get too deep into providing support, but try this: Go into safe mode and Start->Run "MSCONFIG". On the Startup tab you can check and uncheck all of the programs that start when Windows starts, regarless of how they are started. Two approaches: Uncheck them one at a time and reboot out of safe mode to see if the problem is present, or uncheck everything remotely suspicious and re-check them one at a time to see if the problem reappears. THis can be time-consuming, but it will work and it will also give you an opportunity to re-evaluate all those programs and whether you want them anyway. |

Try booting from the Windows CD. One of the options it will give you is to repair the installation of Windows on your hard disk. Choose that. It's just a shot in the dark, but I've seen it work occasionally. I think it goes down a checklist of required files and makes sure they're intact.

Thanks to all for your ideas. I've already tried some of them in the past, will, when time allows, give the others a try. The most depressing update is that today, this occured on my desktop computer and I needed to manually shut it off three times, before it properly booted up. |

Case, Just re-read your post. What makes me think it's a Norton issue is that the problem only seems to occur when the 'GO BACK' splash screen appears prior to me completing entering my password to log onto the system. When the 'GO BACK' splash screen appears after I complete my log in, the computer boots up properly. Then, when the same thing happened this morning on my desktop, which is new since December, I've become more suspicious. Tonight, I logged onto to the Symantec website and let it search my system for any 'errors'. It detected that I was running an 'older' version of Live Update. How this could be possible frankly escapes me, since everything on the desktop is new, including the computer. By the way, I have also previously uninstalled NSW on the latptop and the problem stopped. I'll try that again, since this is very annoying. Thanks again for your input.

Norton recieves more complaints than any other provider of software in the US. Check out AVG and dump Nortons - AVG is less expensive and more reliable. |
