I want to move my monitored alarm to a second phone line we have so I can switch the primary line to VOIP.

I called the alarm company & the only option they offer is to send someone on-site at over $100/hour.

I've scoured the web for some wiring diagrams on how this is done, but no luck. It shouldn't be difficult, but when I tried tinkering it didn't work.

Any ideas?

I don't think the instructions above apply to your situation. MHD, exactly what did you try so far?

MHD, sounds like the critical part here is tracing the wires for both lines, then "just" disconnect from primary line and reconnecting to the secondary line. You have to notify the alarm company that you will be doing this, since it may trip the alarm. Else, next thing you know, PD will be knocking down your door, SWAT team and everything.

Um, the instructions I posted are pretty much standard. I would urge you to please carefully read the schematic and make sure that the full complement of wires are connected and disconnected properly.

Been there done that.

What Gatica says is probably what you'd want to do. There's no need for an RJ31, since your phone loines aren't being used in the manner they would be if you had traditional sevice, the question I had was how are your phones connected to your VOIP? do you have the type of cordless phones that use just one "home base" and the rest are just charging cradles, if so that phone is only connected to on set of lines and it'll be easier to find, if you have your entire house wired to your VOIP then you'll need to find where the main line comes in, (before the VOIP has been wired in)- cut those, use the line that comes in from the street to connect to your alarm in the same manner it was before switching to VOIP

sbenois,

I had seen that site and I have confirmed that I already have an rj31 jack. Trouble is it goes straight into the network interface box & it SHOULD be as simple as connecting it to the 2nd line, but that doesn't seem to work.

Ace - I haven't switched to VOIP, yet. I want to get the alarm straightened out first.

sbenois,

Are you saying I just need to re-wire the jack and not the Network interface box?

Currently line 1 is red/green and line 2 is yellow/black.

Well, when you switched the wires, did you notify the alarm company to monitor the alarm through that phone line? If not, then, I believe, the alarm won't work.

Please explain exactly the wiring you have. Colors, etc. And what is the NID taking the line from, a block?

A picture would help.

We posted over each other there.

If you look at the wiring coming from the outside, is there one line or two?

I am guessing that for line 1, one thick black wire comes into the house and is spliced to a wire that goes to the RJ31, then comes back and goes to your r/g on the block, correct?

For line 2, it's a straight shoot to y/g on the block. Yes?

No.

You are wrong, sir.

Very wrong. What you are advocating could lead to death and cancellation of home insurance.

Wise up.

I am assuming that MHD has a paid up policy with Sbenois Insurance & Casualty.

Correct. This was the brainchild of the brilliant neurosurgeon/actuary Dr. Stefano. He felt that making me the beneficiary on all claims was the safest haven for the policy holders

Well, of course! Is there any other?

Your description sounds pretty close, but I need to take a better look at it tomorrow. I also feel weird discussing home security over a public message board. Can I email you a picture of the connection at the NID?
