I'm scoring a documentary. For some reason, I cannot open the quicktime movie file. I'm running Mac OS 10.4.5 and using Quicktime Pro. When I try to open the file, this is what I see:
I NEED to access this file by noon tomorrow. Any advice and/or suggestions? If you want to download the file that's giving me trouble, the address is www.kriswidger.com/danceschool1(2.12.6).mov. HELP! |

I don't own the MPEG-2 Playback componet. Is this part of the problem - should I own this? I've been working with quicktime for quite some time and I've never had this problem. [edit: my friend was able to download the video with no problem with the link provided above. He has a PC. The video was probably edited using Final Cut Pro, although I'm not entirely sure.] |

Other possibilities: the file is corrupted the server lacks a MIME type for .mov files It's a DP's web site, so he may be assuming everyone in his world has Final Cut Pro, which was the reason for my link above. |

Thanks Dave for the help. The file isn't corrupted. He first gave me the file on a disc. I thought it might have been corrupted, so I asked him to post a new version online. Both files (CD and web) have the same problem. Do you think I need to buy the MPEG-2 software? Will this help with compatilibity issues? |

I think he's using an uncommon codec. Ask him before spending $. |

Thanks Dave! He's uploading a new version now. According to him, this new version is "just plain old quicktime." We'll see soon... |

There's no such thing as "plain ol' quicktime". QT is a whole set of technologies, not just a codec, like, say, mp3 or divx. Depending on how the .mov was encoded, you may not be able to read it (though most of the time you should). If you or your friend has QT Pro, you can just command-J the movie and see what the codec is. |

getting the movie properties will only work if you can open the file, which of course the originator should be able to do. John, if you still can't open the new file that was uploaded, have the guy export the file using "Movie To AVI" or "Movie To QuickTime Movie" using the default settings (a plain old Quicktime File) if he is using QuickTime Pro. If he is using Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro, he should know what to do. I tried everything I could with the first file just to see what I could do, the best I managed was to open it and get a garbled mess of changing colored blocks. Nevermind, I see that he fixed it, and it went from a 17 MB file to a 183.5 MB file, but it works.

THANK YOU all for your help! The new file worked - the old file was probably encoded in a funny format. |
