Does anyone know if there is a portable digital voice recorder which could then create a file I could transfer by USB onto a laptop and have it print out through voice recognition software, and, if so, whether the technology is reliable? I have so much drafting that would be sped up if I could dictate it (not always while at my desk) and then get it into a portable format (eg file on jump drive) which could be translated by a good voice recognition program into a typed draft. (you can tell by this email that my first drafts are very coherent...)

thanks, all.

And if you have an iPod, you can buy a Griffin iTalk which clips onto the top. You can sync the iPod to your computer, and I think the voice files are in MP3 format. And yes, there is voice recognition software. It's far from perfect, but far better than it was recently. How's that for hedging?

Speech recognition is always getting better and never good enough. It's good enough for command recognition, like you get on telephone voice response, because the vocabulary is so limited, but for general dictation I think you'll find yourself aggravated by the errors. That said, the first part of your idea is perfectly reasonable, to dictate into a small USB-based device and get audio files on your PC. You might just collect these files and type them in yourself. Or you might be satisfied with the recognition, depending on how (in)competent a typist you are.

A lot of MP3 players (even cheap ones) have built-in voice recorder technology and are connected to the PC via USB. From there you can use a commercially available VR system like Dragon
