Is anyone using OpenOffice for the Mac? I'm a happy new Mac user (powerbook for my birthday). My husband purchased iWork for me, after being told that it would be a good Office replacement. I've been happy with it for word processing, but I've run into a road block with spreadsheets. I've received a few Excel spreadsheets, and since iWork has no spreadsheet capabilities, I have to e-mail them to my PC. Very tiresome and I want to get my PC off my desk. I really don't want to buy Office, just for Excel. Not sure if I should give OpenOffice a try or if I should just buy AppleWorks. To run OpenOffice, it looks like I have to install X11. So, before I start messing around, I'm looking to you folks for some advice. And while I'm soliciting advice, does anyone have any suggestions for reasonably priced image editing software? I was using Photoshop 5.5 on my PC but I really don't want to pony up for the latest Mac version. I need it mainly for manipulating text and photos for the Web. Thanks! |

Try NeoOffice, the java/cocoa version of OpenOffice. A bit slow to startup, but acceptably fast once running. I find it fine with Excel spreadsheets, except with charts, which can sometimes be off. No X11 needed. For graphics, try GraphicConverter. Not the most full-featured, but very good for most needs. Or The GiMP, which requires X11 (via MacGimp), but is free too. |

While there is nothing wrong with X11 here are a couple of alternatives. NeoOffice (the same as OpenOffice but no need for X11): free Thinkfree Office: $49.95 Mariner Calc (spreadsheet alternative only): $49.95 MarinerPak (combo of above & Mariner Write): $79.95 For Graphics, ImageWell I usually use Lemkesofts "Graphic Converter", $30.00 Adobe Photoshop elements, shop around for the best price. if you install X11: Gimp, image editor Inkscape, vector graphics Blender, 3D modeling, animation, rendering, etc. CosmisPainter, animation Extra: ccPublisher, upload your audio & video files to the net for free hosting Textpander

Thanks you two. You've given me a lot to look at. I have a spreadsheet program on my Newton, but sadly no way to connect it to my Powerbook. |

You would have to be Einstein to do this on OS X, no really. Einstein can be found here (it's a work in progress). I recently dug out an old Newton 100 and have been pondering what to do with it. I'm not positive, but you may need Newton OS 2.1 installed, the question is, how? You may also need to update the ROM. I don't know if you can do either on a 100, I'm glad I only paid five dollars for it a couple of years ago at a garage sale. This may be a whole lot easier in OS 9 (or classic). You can connect from the Newton with a Newton Network Card but not on the Newton 100, or via the IRdA (infrared) port, or apparently even with some wireless cards, although I think this applies to later model Newtons as does the option to use Bluetooth. If you have a flash card (and a card reader) that fits in your Newton you could trancsfer drivers etc. that you need using the card. Then again, I guess you could beam it over via the infrared too. You can get USB to serial adapters, see this page, I think this would be the way to go. You can also connect the Newton to a PC with the right cable or I guess with the USB adapter. I believe the Newton 100 is basically a novelty item... Did you know that by using the Einstein emulator Newton OS2 has been run successfully on the Nokia 770 PDA? http://homepage.mac.com/dillera/PhotoAlbum6.html Below you will find some links that may be of interest. Actually, I have a MessagePad 2100. Loved it and still do. My powerbook doesn't have infrared or a serial connector. I used to sync it with Outlook on my PC, but couldn't get it to work once I upgraded to XP. I have a flash card, but never bothered to get a network card. I also used to use it as a remote for a Sony 200 disk CD changer. Very cool. I'll have to ponder this. I'm doing a small inventory project at my son's school and it would be much easier to bring my newton and its keyboard. Hmmm. A use for my Newton! |
