#1 the new User Account Protection, been there done that #2 safari & firefox will still be better #3 it's all there #4 Spotlight #5 Software Update #6 iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, blah-blah #7 Parental controls through user account and via Safari #8 okay, but backups can be done via the terminal easily (though not for most users), system restore - nope, but that's what backups are for. #9 could be cool #10 like he said, believe it when you see it #11 I'll believe how well it works, when it works that well |

It's amazing Microsoft even bothers trying to improve their OS. Kudos to them for at least that much. The rest is pure monopoly and stuck-in-the-mud consumers who fear change even if it means improvement. |

Microsoft has been playing catchup with Unix and MacOS for decades. Literally. I remember when they introduced Windows. They were so proud that you could now run more than one program at once. Wowie. I had that ability for many years before that. Their brilliance is to tell you about their new features and make it sound as if you never had these abilities before. And if you only use Microsoft, you didn't have them. They are brilliant at marketing, which compensates for their lack of brilliance in technical areas.

I agree with Tom. In the greater scheme of things long term MS is pretty doomed - and here's why I say that: Most of the smart new kids coming out of colleges have Linux installed. They are doing cool things on Linux or other Open Source operating systems. The cool new stuff is happening on Linux. They actively hate Windows - No surprise there I loved Unix but am very agnostic as the NT Kernel was designed by a way cool smart guy (Dave Cutler) ( NT IS VMS REVISITED! ). Anyway the long and short of it is that the new geniuses are doing cool stuff with OSS first, This is good for Apple as the port to another Unix (BSD/MACH thingie called OSX) is easier than to Windows. Microsoft has to play catchup. Cons: Microsoft is excellent at taking out companies that pose a threat. BeOS Anyone? I mean the whole thing where companies basically couldnt load BeOS and dual boot a PC with windows or they would have to pay heaps more for windows? This whole Vista H264 HD DRM nightmare is really scary. I mean have you guys read that you won't be able to build your own machine and have it play HD content? I'm hoping that consumers don't let themselves get tied down and walk with their dollars to an opposing open standard - Like the whole Microchannel vs EISA thing. Hey maybe the H264 thing is good for Apple. :-) --Tarp |
