Quote: Open Archives Initiative DTIC launched its Open Archives Initiative (OAI) to provide broader access to information in its collection. OAI is an international effort focused on furthering the interoperability of digital libraries. A major obstacle for digital libraries has been the inability to share data, since they use different, proprietary technologies that inhibit interoperability. Currently, much authoritative information resides on the "deep Web," comprised of content-rich databases from universities, libraries, associations, businesses and government agencies, including DTIC. In most cases, this information has not been found using commercial search engines for example, Google, Yahoo, MSN and AltaVista. DTIC's Public STINET content is provided in an OAI-PMH 2.0 compliant format. OAI-PMH allows third party harvesters easy access to DTIC's content in a variety of formats (see below). The DTIC metadata is disseminated in multiple formats such as COSATI, MARC, Dublin Core (DC) and HTML using XML technology with links to the digital content using DTIC's Handle Service (http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/handles/index.html). Customers can download citations and full-text documents directly to their systems. The POC for this project: Gopi Nair - 703-767-9055, gnair@dtic.mil
