Have you tried opening the file with VLC?
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

there are a few programs to convert avi to mov... I don't know what is best.
I have cleaner 6... but I do't know how to use it well enough yet.

you can also download a divx codec which helps quicktime open avi's

Check your older thread here, http://www.southorangevillage.com/cgi-bin/show.cgi?tpc=3137&post=546354#POST5463 54

Depending on the codec used to make the avi, you may be out of luck on the Mac.
When do you need this by, how big is the file, I may be able to do it for you later this afternoon (or at least try), I would upgrade to the latest version of Quicktime Pro also, it's a good thing.
Some of the DVD ripping tools mentioned in the older thread above may be able to convert the avi also.
iSquint may work for you
Another app, MovieGate

AVI is a grabbag of codecs. I think I may have some older ones lying around though, if you need them, namely, the three Indeo codecs for the Classic Mac OS. I don't think they work in OS X.

If you can play it with VLC, as JMF mentioned, that's promising, and DivX may do it.
