Looking into purchasing a docking station for Mr. Kibbegirl's Ipod. Read online that the Bose system was just "okay" but that the IM3 and Altec Lansings were rated high. Any thoughts? |

I did a side-by-side test at the Apple Store at MaSH a while back and walked away with the Bose SoundDock. It was the best, in my opinion, for the music we listen to. It also has a somewhat smaller footprint and profile compared to the Altec Lansing InMotion iM7 I was looking at. The Bose seems more portable that the Altec Lansing since it's smaller. Great sound for the price and really fills up a room. I read a review recently that compared the new Apple iPod HiFi to what else is out there. If I find it, I will post a link.

The only negative I've seen about my SoundDock is that you cannot sync the iPod while it's in it. You have to remove it to do that. But it's not a huge deal. The sound on it is phenomenal to me, given it's size. It has decent bass, though mine has some distortion at higher volumes. Decide what you want to use it for first. Then decide what you're willing to spend. The Bose is pretty expensive - you can probably buy a component that will stream audio (and possibly video) from your computer for the same price. |

Docking stations are great, but if you don't need the portability than you could just buy a pair of higher quality speakers (FOR FAR LESS THAN $300) and just attach your ipod to them. If you want the charging, synching and remote functionality 3rd parties make stand alone docks that do both -- also much cheaper than buying the hifi or soundock. I didn't need the synching, because I just wanted to add the ability to use my ipod upstairs in my bedroom. I bought the speakers and a remote control for a little over $100 (the JBL Creature 2 speakers are really good sound quality). And while they ain't Bose speakers, I have a better stereo field because the speakers are set further apart where I want them, and I also have control over the location and volume of my subwoofer. The other beautiful thing is I get to leave my television attached to the speakers all the time so now my t.v. sounds great too. The remote also is a separate device so I get to bring it with me places which is great when I am travelling and I want to keep my ipod in my backpack. My set up isn't a stand alone dock AT ALL. But it really does give me a whole lot of flexibility and quality for a very low price. |

I'm so not informed when it comes to Ipods. AlleyGater, when you say you bought just speakers for your 'pod, how are they hooked up to your 'pod? I ask because I wanted to "present" this to Mr. Kibbegirl from the kids for his b'day and don't want to get upset if I can't do this properly :-) Also, Rastro, which SoundDock did you purchase? Is it Bose? Finally, I wanted this to go in his office but have the portability to use at home, if he ever wanted to do so. Thanks to all! |

If this is a gift for someone, you DEFINITELY want to go the way of the dock. The dock would be a MUCH more presentable gift. To do it my way though, you just use a standard stereo mini cable that goes from the speakers to the headphone jack. Simple as pie. Sounds just fine. Speakers usually come with the cord. If not the chord is like $1. |

Just last week, Apple introduced their own dock.. called iPod HiFi http://www.apple.com/ipodhifi/ It's gotten great reviews, and I have to go listen. I have a Bose dock, love that. One advantage of the Apple HiFi is that it's also battery powered, if you want to take it with you. Check it out, I want one! |

So when do you plan to put your Bose in the classifieds - and how much will you ask for it? |

I believe I'll keep my Bose for now.. maybe move either the Bose or the Apple HiFI to my new office. I just read another review of the HiFi - the thing sounds great! |
