Tom Reingold and I had a long learning experience with this today, but the net result was we didn't quite get it done. Does anyone either have this immediate capability, or know whether NetNomads does? I know they're closed right now, but if I thought I could get this made tomorrow...

Camera is a Sony DCR-TRV 260. For now, I'll write the kid a note to the teacher saying why we're late...Thanks

What exactly are you trying to do?
Do you need to edit the footage, add titles, etc., or do you just need to transfer it directly to a DVD ?
What were the problems you were having?

I could transfer it directly to a DVD via my stand alone recorder, or use iMovie/iDVD for some editing if that is needed.

Just need to put the tape to DVD so she can show it at school on DVD player. I'm gonna bring it to work and see whether we have that capability there...if not, are you saying you have said capability? That would be great. I'll PL you later if so...Thanks! Poor Tom and I struggled for some time (we neither of us are familiar with this kinda stuff).

Just emailed you back, I can hook the camcorder up via the iLink cable directly to the DVD recorder and record it direct to DVD if that's what you need.

It was really frustrating. First, Sony didn't have any downloads for Mac, so we used my Windows system. We figured out how to make a WMV file. But the Mac is my system with the DVD burning. I transferred the file, but the mac doesn't deal with WMV. So I found a free converter for Windows that goes between various formats and made an AVI file. But it encoded with a codec that my mac's installation of quicktime couldn't read. It was just a few minutes of white picture and silence. It didn't tell me which codec I had used. Thanks.

And iDVD is totally mysterious and frustrating to me and Cynicalgirl. It has this panning picture of placards but none of the controls made any sense whatsoever. iMovie wasn't much better. I'm not even sure what the difference in purpose between the programs is.

So I burned a CD with the WMV file on it.

What a presumptuous assignment. It took two smart adults several hours, and we didn't figure it out. What the heck is a 7th grader supposed to do?!

It's not the first time I've heard this story, all the students should show up at the teachers/principals/directors house and ask for help in completing these assignments.

Didn't iDVD or iMovie just recognize that there was a camera attached to the Mac?
I've done that with my Sony camera, it was immediately recognized, and I had full control of the start/stop functions with the Mac.
I thought the whole process was incredibly easy, and it looks even easier with iLife '06, offering a "one-step" process from the camera to DVD.

Hmm, it didn't occur to me to use iDVD to control the camera directly.

\2{Monster}, I like that idea of showing up at the teacher's house.

You guys will be happy to know that our ops guy at work helped me out. We have Dells here at work, and as the ops guy, he also has a DVD burner. I don't recall what all was done, but basically he moved the appropriate segments of the camera tape onto his desktop. From there, he brought it down to DVD.

The picture quality ain't great; we dont' necessarily know the right file formats etc. to use, and this wasn't the time for a learning experience (though Tom and I had one!). Mostly it's a case of assignment done (Thank God!!)

I would most likely not have spent as much time on it if it had been for one of my kids. That's retrospect. It was a curiosity to me, which is why I was willing to try for so long.

Glad it's done though. She better get an A.

So, you were being kind to us? Well, you were most certainly that and we are grateful. Have no clue what grade she'll get as that teacher is a tad opaque on such subjects. Thank you, thank you, thank you, To-MAS!

I enjoyed your company and the challenge. I really like your daughter. I nearly forgot it was a school assignment.

We had some laughs, too, right?

Always have fun with youse guys, Tom. Definitely some laughs. Did your older daughter ever find acceptable munchies?

My kid is taken with how many computers you have in your house. We have 2 fairly late model functioning ones. It's the people using them that aren't so swift every day of the week.

Yep \2, it was a heckuva mission but we took that hill. Thanks for your offers, too.

My laptop is company-provided. Older daughter bought her own laptop. I would not have bought it for her. Two of the other computers are old and virtually useless, but they add to the count of working computers in the home (six).

What's funny is when we're all in the living room and are IM'ing each other.
