I recently decided to join this century and give up my dial-up connection. I signed up for Verizon DSL and have had a number of problems with it so far. Does anyone have a broadband service that they'd recommend? If so, would you mind including how much the service costs? Thanks!

Cable modem costs more and gives you more. It's faster. comcast charges about $40/month, plus you have to pay about $5/month to rent the modem. You could buy one, if you prefer.

If you live in South Orange, you would use cablevision's service instead. The cost is about the same as comcast's.

I've been plesantly surprised by the el-cheapo $15/month Verizon DSL service. I thought it was going to be too slow (and, yes, it is slower than my cable was), but it is perfectly acceptable and I use it pretty intensly (big downloads [never watched Lost, but I have the first two seasons now] and I use remote desktop from work to my home pc).

More speed might be nice...but for $15, this is good enough.

We too have Verizon and sometimes I do experience problems and/or interference with the service. The main problem with Verizon DSL is that many of the outside wires from Verizon need to be replaced in our neighborhoods. They are not underground like cable, and the squirrels dig into these poor things year after year, leaving tiny holes in the covering. Therefore, moisture sets in and when that happens, not only is it a problem making or receiving phone calls, it knocks me offline as well. If there's any phone static, DSL will not work properly.
