Create (or edit) a file called .htaccess file on your server and include this line in it:

ErrorDocument 404 /error.html

where error.html is the name of your error document

For some reason, I can't save the .htaccess file without it being hidden. It says the "." is reserved for system files. How do I save the file so I can see it and upload to my server. I've already created the error page.

you may have to make the change to the file as it sits on the server, or do it on a pc.

In your FTP app, there is probably a preference to allow you to see files that start with a period.
