I'm not sure how this happened. All I know it is not *my* fault -this time. My sister tells me she shut down her computer. When she tried to get back on she gets a screen saying she needs to log back onto windows. In the user name field it says 'owner' then there is a space for a password. I don't remember seeing this on her computer before. Of course, Neither she nor I know what the password is. I was able to get the computer to a System Restore type screen that says it will restore the computer to the way it was when first tsken out of the box. It also says it will not delate the data. But my guess is any programs added in the past three plus years will be lost. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get past this screen? I am pretty sure something similar happened to me a couple of years ago, but I don't remember how I corrected it. I think it was through safemode possibly. thanks! |

It won't delete the programs added.

So if I use this option her programs and data are safe? I already told her she is most likely SOL. That she might loose all she's added. She had the nerve to tell me 'that's not an option.' Ah, hello sisterdeasr. It's not *my* fault your computer is messed up. Is there any way I can create a password recovery disk on my computer then use it on hers? I thought I had one but don't. |

There are utilities that let you find the old password or reset it: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ and http://www.loginrecovery.com/ Both require you to boot off a floppy or CD (they provide the data to put on the floppy or CD for free). The first one lets ou set the "Owner" password. The second utility will tell you what the password is, but it requires you to have access to another internet connected computer to get back the the "decrypted" password. |

Just hit enter... My kid's computers have that password screen (I have been meaning to deactivate it) and they don't type in anything and just hit enter...It might be the same for yours. |

Hmmm Don't know how I did this but, I created a 'Password Reset Disk' on my computer, using *my* pasword. Took it across the hall to my sisters and somehow I got past the windows screen asking for a password. I somehow got the computer into Safemode. It looks like most of the old icons are there. Going to have to deal with it when I come back from the doctor. kmk- I tried the hitting enter trick. Though it's worked in the past on my computer, it wouldn't work on my sister's. Thanks for the sugggest though. Tom if I can't correct the problem when I get back I'm going to try what you posted. Thanks for the suggestion. Hopefully I won't come back to find both my laptop and desk computer messed up. My sister is on my laptop and my mom wants to use this one when I leave. |

JTA; Is this an xp machine? If so do you get to the Log on screen where you are presented with a user name and password prompt or a Login icon for the various users on the PC, if you are asked for a user name and password use the user name "administrator" and press enter. If you are shown the icons to click to login press the ctrl, alt, del and you should get the user name and password prompt type in administrator and press enter. Chances are your sister never set a password for the administrator account.

Walker- Yes it's a XP. Funny how this didn't start until a few days ago. She gets a log in screen asking for a password. I have now mine set up to ask for a password to keep the rest of my family off my computer. They've decided they like it better then my sister's. My sister is still dragging my laptop around because she likes it better then her desktop and even had the nerve to ask if she can keep it. Uh, I don't think so. We're waiting for her to find out what time her physical theraphy is Friday before I try to set something up with someone to come 'clean' her computer. I got it where she can sign on the internet; but she still gets strange messages. I told her she's going to have to buy a wireless card so we can set it up to go through my router. |
