My old Gateway is starting to go, monitor barely works and went to the MAC store at the mall. The new Dual Processor IMACS looks like a great computer. Few questions: 1. Can I transfer and use my MS Word/Powerpoint docs on the Appleworks or should I go with the MAC:MS office? 2. I have comcast service which I use the MS outlook email client. How does that work on the IMAC? Can I transfer all my addresses, calender, old mail, etc? Thanks Jeff |

I don't know about Appleworks. You can buy Office for the Mac which will allow you to transfer and use your Word and Powerpoint docs. Office comes with Entourage, which is the Mac equivalent of Outlook. I only know one person who uses Entourage. She says it works very well for her. I'm sure there is a way to transfer all your Outlook data to Entourage. I got an iMac this past fall. I do think it's very well designed and made, and it's a good value for the money. I predict it will last longer than a typical PC.

Did you ask those questions at The Apple Store? I think you would at least need iWork, not Appleworks. iWork consists of Pages, a word processor app, and Keynote, which will open and translate Powerpoint docs. I think the answer may come down to how much compatablilty you need. For backwards compatability with other older pc's and versions of Powerpoint, you might need MS Office for the Mac, but I'm not positive. Apple's Mail allows you to import from other apps, but I'm not sure of the process. There's lots of info on Apple's website about "switching". My son and my daughter each have iMacs, one has the Intel Dual processor, both are great computers. The built-in camera and Apple's iChat have allowed us to do three-way video conferencing, lots of fun, and excellent quality video. The built-in audio is also very good.

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=T58 16LL/A Move2Mac will do it You can get your Outlook mail into Entourage, and via Entourage into Apples Mail. follow the steps here. If you buy your Mac at the Apple Store, bring in your PC and a Genuis will transfer the files for you, basic file transfer is free, for more advanced transfer options Get Pro Care, see more info here Another link of interst, http://www.apple.com/switch/howto/ I have no problems opening MS word docs with Appleworks, Keynote will work with Powerpoint, iWork '06 supports a wide range of industry standard file formats including Microsoft PowerPoint and PDF. Keynote 3 imports and exports PowerPoint files and exports presentations to QuickTime®, Macromedia Flash, HTML and iLife. Pages 2 imports and exports Microsoft Word, RTF, HTML and plain text files. Both Keynote 3 and Pages 2 export to PDF and import associated AppleWorks® files.

I moved from a PC w/ MS Office to a PowerBook last October. So far I haven't broken down and purchased Office for the Mac. My kids use Appleworks on their computers but I use iWork. I'm personally not crazy about Appleworks. I've been very happy using Pages from iWork for word processing, and the built-in mail and calendar apps for, well, the obvious. I had no problem importing my outlook data to the powerbook. The only snag I hit was with opening Excel files. iWork does not come with a spread sheet program. Since I'm not a heavy spread sheet user, I downloaded NeoOffice (on advice from some of the above posters, thanks!) and it's been good enough for my purposes. Check out the making the switch link that was posted above, I think. I found it very helpful when I was transferring data over. HTHs |

Don't forget about Open Office. It's an open source knock off of MS Office and they try to allow you to open and save standard MS Office files. It is NOT a true replacement for the real MS software but it definitely will do in a pinch. If you REALLY are anti-MS and/or just don't want to spend the cash on the Office Suite...it's at least worth a look-see. |
