Need help with TIVO programming

Haven't been able to get it going since (almost a year now), and we miss it sorely. What are you using to change the channel on the cable-ready television? Usually, there is an ir changing the channel on the cable box. If you don't have the ir set up to change the channel directly on the television, it isn't actually changing the channel even though TiVo thinks it is.
