I'm trying to condense disks I have by putting them on flash thumb drives but have run into a problem. I have 5 disks of what I call 'Chicken Soup' type stuff (sappy stories) and joke a friend use to send me. According to the file information I saved the two files on the one disk with Word Perfect 10. Plus there are WordPerfect icons for each file. The files show they are 217KB and 736KB, so I know they can't be 'empty' files. When I try to open them with WordPerfect I'm unable to. I can open them in notepad, but then it's gibberous. Any ideas why this might happen? TIA |

There are lots of reasons why files might stop working. Maybe they are corrupted? I think asking why files would stop working is the wrong question. You should be asking people if they can think of ways to make them work. Having said that, have you tried opening the Wordperfect files in MS Word? Do you actually use Wordperfect? |

Thanks Alley I tried opening them in MS Word. I can open them in note pad, but there are all those funky symbols and HTM type coded. But I can't open them with Netscape or any of the browers. I don't think the file's corupt though. At least I hope not. |

I would just burn another disk of the same stories saved in regular text files, .txt, or in rich text format, .rtf, then see if you can open them. Wordperfect, ugh.... |

BTW, JTA, you're not trying to use thumb drives as archives, are you? I wouldn't count on them being stable enough (and they're easily lost). |

Monster- Well if I had access to the stuff on the disks I would save them as something else. But, I moved the stuff off my old computer before it bit the dust. I know the information on the disks are emails from Juno 4.0; but as you know, I don't have the Juno Software on either of my computers anymore. I did find where I can download Juno 4.0 and have downloaded it. Will try to import the info from the disks tomorrow. Eponymous- Actually I was intending to transfer the 6-10 disks I have of what I call 'Carla's' onto on thumb drive. Now I'm concerned. How are they not stable? I know what you mean about loosing them. I've already lost one, but it just had some graphics on it. I plan to keep them all in the same place to prevent another lost one. But I've also lost CD's and regular disks. I do have a 160 gigabyte (I think) Backup hard drive but am not sure how to hook it up to my computer. Monster was helping me with some computer stuff a couple weeks ago, but we ran out of time and couldn't finish. |

JTA: When you try to open the wordperfect files in wordperfect, do you get an error message and if so what does the error message say? There could be a variety of reasons why the file isn't opening. One thing you can try is to "preview" the file rather than "open" it. Open Wordperfect. Select open file. Go to the directory/folder where the file is. Highlight the file BUT DON'T OPEN IT. Instead, open the preview window and see if the file displays in the window. If so, you may be able to copy the file and paste it into a new wordperfect document. Let me know what happens when you try this. |

Thanks Joan for the suggestion! Since I'm downstairs on my laptop and the disks upstairs, I'll have to try it tomorrow. Then I'll have more time as well as the disks. |
