I'm considering 2 15.4" notebooks both priced at $799. Which is better? Gateway - Pentium M Processor 740 (1.73 Ghz, 533 Mhz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache) Memory 512 MB 533 Mhz DDR2 S DRAM (2-256 MB modules) Dell - Intel Core Duo processor T2300 (2 MB Cache/ 1.66 GHz / 667 Mhz FSB) Memory 1 GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533 MHz, 2 Dimm I don't understand what all this means but know it's important. Any advise is much appreciated! Judi |

If those are the only differences, then the Dell is the way better deal. Are there any other differences? Hard drive size, graphics, weight, etc? |

Otherwise they're both identical. Does this seem like a good deal? |

If that is all that is different, Earlster is right. The Dell is better. Are these advertised on the web anywhere? If so, you might let us know so we can be more critical on these judgements to help you out. |

To cut through the techno-babble a little (and don't get me wrong, I love confusing people with computer lingo ) the Dell is significantly faster and will probably last longer. |

Judi, Judi, Judi Obsolescence abounds - Both systems put you behind the 8 ball - You should be looking at 64 bit AMD - Win XP is available in 64 bit flavor from HP. This would give the machine better performance over the next 3-4 years - 32 bit without option to migrate to 64 bit really makes this a toy. You will see what I'm talking about in about 2 years. Dell is aware of their dilemma, this is why they bought 'Alienware' last week - they are an AMD vendor - Intel will not have a competing chip until third quarter '06. You can alway cancel. See link: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_series.do?storeName=computer _store&category=notebooks/hp_pavilion/dv5000_series&series_name=dv5000z_series&c atLevel=3&tab_switch=true&tab=specs 64 bit Windows XP Professional upgrade from Microsoft is free - the difference will astound you.

true, but 64 bit programs still haven't hit the bigtime, they aren't being developed all that fast, by the time that they become all that, it would be time to get another laptop anyway |
