K--I hate this machine. That said, I am knee-deep in kaka. My Java thinks it doesn't work. I've downloaded Java from the Java site. My Norton AV stuff won't work any more. The quarantine thinks there's a virus in there, but I can't run anything to delete. Another site says my cookies aren't enabled--they are. Symantec charges $$ to talk to them. I've posted on tech boards with no responses yet. I've upgraded to IE6, if that helps. This all started after a Windows update prompt, which I clicked on. Since then, nothing's right. Somebody have an idea? Enigmabomb? |

What was the "Windows update prompt"? Was it from MS web site? |

Shame on me but I don't know. Prompt came from my bottom toolbar, so I hit it for the "upgrade." My brother-in-law gave me holy hell about it, too. Note to self--never click on anything until I run it past someone else. More help? |

Sounds like that "update" installed a virus. As it is affecting your anti-virus software, too, I have no idea what to recommend (other than the useless, non-help of advocating Apple computers). Is there a way to use Norton in safe-mode to scan for virii? |

A few quick suggestions from my son, Joseph: 1) clean out your temp file cache. In most versions of windows, this can be done by going to tools - internet options, and clicking on delete tempary internet files. 2) unistall and reinstall norton. If norton does not reinstal cleanly, you can try to do a manual unistall, using the step by step directions found on the norton website. However, that's entirely up to you, and most techs I've spoken to have shuddered at the thought of fooling around with the windows registry, which is what that entails, even with the step by step directions. If that fails to fix your problem, and you are using a non-NT version of windows (3.1, 95, 98, ME), instead of throwing out your hardware, you can use the FDisk program in DOS to remove all traces of windows (as well as most if not all viruses) from your harddrive. This is something of a scorched earth method, but it is preferable to buying a new computer. Before you use FDisk, make sure that you have backed up all non-infected data on removable media (if you're not sure if it's infected wait until after you reinstall and update norton before copying the data back to your hard drive); have made a floppy boot disk that has a dos prompt and cd-rom drivers; and either a) the system recovery cd that came with your computer when you bought it as well as the drivers and installation disks for any software that was not bundled with the computer when you bought it; or b) the drivers for every single device in your computer, especially "plug and play" devices (also know as "plug and pray"), and the instalation disks for all of the software on your computer including windows. Information about the FDisk command can be found at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q255867#3 I have been told that instead of using "fdisk c:" followed by "format c:/s" as the microsoft site suggests, you are better off just using "fdisk c:/s" Note: While I have some knowlege with computers, I am by no means an expert, and you will probably be better served by waiting for one of them to respond. goodluck, Joe |

Dave, you rock--future possibility Joan/Joe--thanks, already tried the uninstall/reinstall, no dice (that was 2 weeks ago), and I have no way of getting all my data saved on disk (no ZIP drive, no burner)--many of our files are too big to save to floppy. Burner was on the list to buy, but I think we will upgrade the whole system instead. However, until that comes to pass, I still need this bugger operational. GRRRRRRR... |

Ed--if I could understand the technical jargon of which I speak, my a** wouldn't be where it is right now Hey, Dave, not that I'm sold completely, but if I switched to Apple, would it take the stored music files from this computer with no problem? |

*jumpin up and down* I FIXED IT! All by myself, not a dime! Word to the wise for those using Windows ME...if you download the MS virtual machine update, it will cause ME and Norton Antivirus to stop speaking to each other. A .cab file is responsible for the whole thing. NAV sees it as a threatening file, bags it as virus, and then error messages come fast and furious. Delete the .cab file--ONLY if you are using the combo of NAV 2000 and Windows ME. Yeah, I know, time to upgrade, but that was the problem. I may turn out not to be so ignorant after all........ Dave, on http://www.ttzforums.com/, they have some really great smilies. I especially like the two that puke on each other, and a whole line doing the wave. Whaddaya think? Any way to borrow some? PS, great site. |
