Lately, I have been getting about 3 or 4 messages PER DAY like the following.
The Sender and subject are always different, so it's not possible to add them to spam filters.

Does anyone know what this is & how to stop them?

It's program-created spam...if the subject line doesn't make any sense...don't open it.

depending on your mail program you may be able to block any messages from that senders domain...

I know microsoft entourage for mac does it

I have the same problem, and I have yet to figure out how to get Apple Mail to block it. It's been driving me crazy too.

MHD, is it always from an australian college? You might be able to block edu.au (I assume you don't correspond with too many Australian co-eds )

If youhave office suite for mac...you definitely want to switch your mail program to entourage...MUCH better...it currently filters ALL messages like that...you may want to check once in a while though because, as with any filter, good mail can get caught as well

MHD, was there any component that was actual spam, or just unsolicited email?

Many spammers use text from books, poetry, or random words to fool bayesian filters (filters that look at the content, not just the from and subject lines). Often they will hide the text by making it white or a white background, or very small, or some other trick to make it unreadable. But if your mail reader doesn't cooperate, or if the spammer is lazy, the text will be completely visible.

Someone could be testing Verizon's spam catching capabilities, if there was no pitch or attachment in the emails.

Rastro,

Not sure if it always from an Australian college. I need to double check that. I get so much mail from Australian co-eds, I'd hate to block by domain.

Funny...when I read the mail with a Web Browser, the content appears to be a solicitation for buying stock. However, when I copy/paste the text, all that copies is the garbage above.

I invested a small amount of time on this. If I remember correctly after viewing the header on these emails (I usually get a couple of them at the same time) the domain changes. Which is what prevented me from being able to block by domain.

I just need some time to do more work on it. I keep thinking Apple's Mail would LEARN that these are spam, but it appears that it's spam filtering engine isn't smart enough to catch it. Also Apple Mail's filtering engine doesn't appear to be configurable to filter out by domain. I think I need to do the filter on my router (or download and run some other application), which I find even more annoying.

MHD, that's what I was talking about. They use the additional text to keep the mail from getting properly filtered. When you view it in a browser, the text color is probably set to whatever the background is. When you copy it, the text color is not copied.

Look up Bayesian Filter in wikipedia to see what they are trying to accomplish.

The commercial enticement is probably an image that looks like text, but it's not characters, so to speak. It's currently nearly impossible for spam detectors to know which images are spam, so it looks at the texts of messages. The text above doesn't fit a pattern, which is why the spam detector can't catch it. The spam generating program takes random words and chain them together to make sure they don't fit a pattern.

At least part of it is David Copperfield. You gotta admire the creativity of the spammers, the bastards.

The best advice you could get would probably to stop using the verizon.net em. Switch to something with (I believe) beter spam filters such as gmail or yahoo mail. You get the additional advantage of not being tied to Verizon should you ever want to change your ISP.

One thing to check off in your mail rules in OS 10.4.X is the check box for
Trust junk mail headers set by my Internet Service Provider, if your ISP uses a mail analysis tool such as SpamAssassin or BrightMail, Mail will leverage that service.
If in Panther try creating a new rule using the Message is Junk Mail setting, also try subject and content rules with the content is equal too setting, this might take a lot of tweaking and adding new lines to the rule.
You can install spamassassin on OS X Client, you don't need to be running server

You can use SpamSieve, http://c-command.com/spamsieve/
or SpamSweep too, http://www.bainsware.com/spamsweep/

I agree with TomD! Verizon offers really bad email service. Their DSL connectivity is fine, so stick with that if you like.

gmail's spam filters are excellent.
