Could my 12 year old play this and not be exposed to anything unseemly? It looks hysterical! |

I am only level 2 (as Libby so rudely announced to the world) so I can't really answer that question. But my first hour of playing has shown me NOTHING unseemly unless of course you offended by non-sequiturs. On the other hand there is a chat element to the world. And when you are chatting with live humans you always need to be cautious. |

the game itself is quite g-rated but alot of the humor will go over his head. it pokes fun at rpg games and internet fads. I am only level 2 (as Libby so rudely announced to the world) sorry, i am under the influence of a moxious madrigal and some goofballs. they make me a little more moxilicious than normal. |

Good Lord... Today's really, really disturbing story out of Oklahoma mentions KOL. The murderer spent most of his spare time playing it. I am a parent of three young girls. I will not introduce them to this game or permit them to play it if they find it on their own. |

i dont even know where to begin with the ignorance and hysteria that appears on this board from time to time. i bet the murderer also spent some time eating and sleeping. make sure your girls stop that as well. |

It is neither ignorance nor hysteria...it is something I was "on the fence" about and, obtuse as it may seem to you, this has helped me make up my mind. Instead of being the one who introduces my daughter to an online game/chatroom, I (being her mother) plan on introducing her to something new in her physical world - like tennis. Yes - I know there have been problably thousands of child murderers who play tennis. It is just that they don't discuss their fantasies with them in a chatroom. |

i heard the murderer also liked to urinate once a day. you better stop your girls from doing that or they will get the urge to kill! if i were you , i would have their bladders surgically removed immediately! |

kmk, not just not a parent, but he's strongly against funding public education. My initial reaction was similar to his, but I understand the desire to keep one's kids safe, and to elimiate a *potential* threat. Do you monitor your kids other internet usage, though? IMs? MySpace and similar sites? |

kmk, I support your right to police your childrens activities. Having said that I was raised on rock and roll, video games and I even played dungeons and dragons. All of which were in the news at one time or another for being the cause or partially the cause for both murder and suicide. So have many things though. Visual art, creative writing, sports, archery, hunting, biking, etc. I am EXTREMELY reluctant to say that a cutesy role playing game online was bad or even a bad influence on someone just because a crazy person used it. That's actually not even remotely rational, in the least. The person may have been suicidal or sociopathic before they found that game. You didn't give me enough information to even make a determination that they were even related. You just assumed they were. Remember Columbine? Those kids listened to Marilyn Manson. So that music must be responsible for all those deaths, right? That is almost identical to what you are saying. I always tend to START my assumptions when this stuff happens that the parents were responsible for the way those children turned out before I assume that external factors are involved. Judging from the way you care about your children, I would guess that your children could play KOL (or do any of the things I listed on this post and much more) and they would be fine. I did ALL of them, and I turned out fine. It's good to be concerned for your kids safety it's another to create false assumptions and propagate irrational hysteria online though. |

My 10 y.o. plays KOL, I've checked it out very thoroughly -- I have a persona on all the games my kids use online (as well as a myspace in the name of our cat, Mr. Pearl). Anyway KOL strikes me as harmless. Just my .02. |

No more patronizing than you sound all the time. You obviously don't understand (your claims to the contrary notwithstanding), or you would not be mocking a parent's choice on how they are raising their children. Did you even read her post of 2:25 on 4/17? |

There's another aspect of controlling a child's access to the online environment... not the danger factor, or the possible 'bad influences' (that obviously DO exist) - the other concern is TIME. A friend of mine told me about this... she simply does not want her kids zoned out in front of the computer for 12 hours a day, not going outside, not seeing friends, not getting exercise... (dammit, I just described most of my weekdays). No, I don't think there's a strong correlation between this game and killing someone. I suppose ANY outside contact via the Internet introduces a certain level of danger to a child, but it seems like that should be controllable with simple communication. If you don't have a good, open relationship with the kid you've got bigger problems than the Internet, right? And finally - if a parent decides that a child is not going to do something, who are we to say they're wrong? That's like saying a parent who 'forces' a child to learn piano is wrong... it's just none of our concern. I mean, parents should have the liberty to raise their kids the way they wish, without outside agencies meddling. I'm surprised that a Libertarian would want to change that....
