Very cool and the nice thing is that you can share the calendar with others. I'm sure it will eventually evolve into a nice piece of groupware. |

My wife and I can finally have one central online calendar that integrates nicely with our email. Just waiting now for google to let us keep a central address book. |

All I know is, Google calendar is free! Penciled in calendar doesn't work well when you are not at home and need to see the schedule for the week, or next week. Unless...maybe I could set up a web cam, have it point to our desk calendar, then set up some web hosting, broadcast the secure signal over the internet, and then access from said remote location. that might work. |

From what I can gather Google is making a frontal assault on Microsoft's groupware vision - Outlook. The Internet centric calendar will be the beginning of a more complex application integration plan for not only Outlook but the whole 'MS Office Suite'. This is why Microsoft's stock was smoked last week and they (MS) announced a restructuring plan to combat Google. This can only be good for consumers in the long run - it would be nice if you could transfer data from the Outlook Calendar into the Google Calendar sooner than later...one step at a time. |

I'll be very happy to start using Google Calendar once I can sync my Palm with it. I can't imagine moving off my Palm for now.

Palm synch is apparently in the works. There are work arounds, however, it does not sound like people are willing to do that. I would say that is the biggest request on the group message board though. Then the to-do list! You can transfer your calendar data, but its more of an import/export functionality. I am sure your aware of that, but just thought I'd mention it. |

I have nothing to hide from the gov't. Thanks for the tip, Rick B. Now, if only I'd remember to look at my calendar regularly... |

Didn't see the file transfer until you mentioned it - This is great since you can create multiple calendars (one for each kids schedule & one for my alter ego) in addition I can share a calendar with my wife. Also I can sync with my Pocket PC the only down side is as Glock mentioned the sharing of this data with the intelligence community - not that I have anything to hide it makes me feel that in the future it will be a job in itself to truly remain anonymous in cyberspace. |

Wow once again Google provides something that many others have been providing exceedingly well and equally free for years, but it's Google so it's really really cool now! Unless you use strong encryption, your data and voice communications are shared with the intelligence community whether Google shares the info with them or not. However, their position in regards to their growth in China is, to me, untenable.

Argon, actually, I applaud their position in China. Rather than do something where they could be forced to turn over the identity of a blogger, which would ultimately land that blogger in jail, they choose not to offer the service. What is your opinion of Yahoo and Microsoft, and their actions w/r/t China? As for the calendar service, it looks to be alot like Yahoo's, and they've been offering it for yars. |

My opinion of Yahoo and Microsoft in China is the same as my opinion of Google in China. But to keep on the techie side of things, I can't understand why everyone fawns over Google so much... they have yet to wow me with much that is truly innovative. The one thing I can point to that really works is the hybrid view in Google Maps. Terraserver does satellite imagery better and there are many players in the mapping & direction game doing just about the same thing just about equally well, but Google did do something innovative and useful when they created the hybrid map view. Calendar? Big whoop. And I find their little cartoon dialog boxes exceedingly annoying, it's my least favorite part of Google Maps and now I see they're sticking that feature into the calendar interface too. It's nice they have added a decent looking calendar to their suite, but really, this is worth fawning over?

Argon, I thought it was worth it. In fact, so much that I wanted to share with MOL in case they didn't know. Do you use something else, something better? Just curious.... Once they get their to-do list and palm synch I can dump that awful outlook suite, and not only that, have access to my information from anywhere, yes anywhere! For free! On top of that, I can choose to share my calendar and open it up for others to access it, if I so desire (without running an exchange server in my home). I can create public calendars (which MOL IMO should do) and get pepople to join them. I can invite anybody with an email address to my events (similar to eVite). I also really like gmail, and its method of storing conversations, and being able to label them appropriately, instead of dumping things in folders (ever try putting your one email message into two applicable folders in Outlook?) Google maps was great when it came out, mainly because it wasn't expected, but even more so because of the addition of the satellite maps. Next I could talk about google video, maybe frappr, google local? Picasa? Oh, and the new 3D imaging tool Sketch Up that Google is providing? Did I mention Google Earth? Did I mention how open their maps API is and how anyone can create applications utilizing the google maps technology? Go to google.com and personalize your page with all of the widgets out there. They are running a trial google hosting program, they offer personalized web sites for users. Go to the google labs page, see what they are working on next. Soon they are going to need a page just to tell us what they don't do. {yes, I have consumed a lot of the google kool-aid} They seem to have it out for Microsoft, and they have the capital to compete. Makes for better products for the consumer. don't be such a hater man... |
