Maybe it's a sign that I am posting too much, but I seem to get the "file locking" error message about 40% of the time I try to preview or post a message (I haven't kept a detailed tally, but that's my sense). It was an issue for a while after the conversion, disappeared for a bit, and now it seems to be back.

More recently, I get the error message, return to the preview page, try posting again and then get the "duplicate post" error message. I'm running IE for Mac 5.2 on OS 10.1.5

Get a real PC.

It won't solve your problem, provide you a cool sleeping night or improve your golf score beyond your recent best, but,it will show you what you are missing!

File lock error messages appear on my real PC too. We need less participation or expanded capacity for the errors to go away. Looks like we are the victims of our own obsession.

lol.. George, you know the Macintosh is the vehicle chosen by our estemmed webmeister, Dave. I'm typing this on a Windows-based Toshiba Equium 7100D (don't tell the people who run this place!, and the only thing I am missing is my Mac :-)

It's difficult to appreciate a Mac without having and using one on a daily basis. You actually forget that it's a computer and you become more productive. There are independent studies that document higher profit margins at companies that use Macs. What's most exciting is that Apple will be introducing a new series of Power Macs tomorrow (rumor has it). I intend to be a "first day" purchaser. :-)

As to "File Locking" it has nothing to do with your computers, but is a problem on the server and the traffic the site gets. I get it sometimes, too.

So, Dave, the question remains: When I get a file locking error and it tells me to wait 5 seconds and retry, why sometimes on the retry does it tell me that I have just posted and this is a duplicate? Was the file locked the first time or not??

I often get the file locking message when I am doing "new messages" (selecting the messages since the last time I searched)

Unfortunately, after that happens, it has usually recorded the fact that I tried and when I repeat the search there is nothing in the results field since it thinks my last search was only a few seconds before.

File locking is a mystery to me.

The identical thing happens to me Sac, and it's annoying. The way I get around the system thinking I just checked for new postings, is to go to the option that lets you check for the last "8 hours" for example.

I've done the same thing, but then I seem to lose some of my profile characteristics ... notably the one that automatically opens links in new windows. I've grown very used to that one and hate going back to "right-click" - "open in new window". Very lazy of me, I know. Since I have two usernames (one left over from the "realname" section that has gone dormant now) so my usual workaround is to go back and enter the search again for the other username, checking off the "don't remember this search" box to forestall a repeat of the problem.

File locking has been happening more often - particularly after I have written brillantly!
Where is this reload thing I'm supposed to click? When I close that message window, I'm off MOL.

I've been having the same problem. Clicking on the back arrow on my tool bar usually gets me back to my post screen. Then I save my text to Word or Notepad, depending on length, before trying to hit enter again.

One day last week I got so many file lock errors in a row that I just e-mailed the text of my post to Dave and asked him to post it for me if I couldn't get through.

Let me add my banter to the voices.

This file locking problem is happening more often.

I say we join together and demand that it be fixed, or we move to another site!!

What say you?

Oh I know I know. File Locking is a method to prevent data from being garbled in a file (2 different streams of data going to it) this way, it keeps things sequential. File locking error means the file is open and being written to. I had to implement this in a crappy perl counter I wrote. Onward and upward.

File Lock Error occurs most often when I try to get back to the main menu screen in order to toggle from one directory of the message board to another. If each directory had links for each of the other directories, this might free up some of the traffic congestion.

Dave, Jaime would this work? Is it doable?

Sorry, but no. The system is what it is. Nothing's perfect. I get it about twice a day. Just 2 extra clicks a day. Not so bad.

I have also been getting the File Locking Error a lot. And then when I try to repost, it says that I have already posted the same thing. Why can't it make up its mind?

Today I got the following: Tried to post, got File Locking Error. Tried to repost, got File Locking Error again. Tried the third time, got You Have Already Posted This. Looked at end of thread--my post was not there. Went back to submenu, it listed the previous poster as the most recent. Went back into thread, my post was now at the bottom. Went back to submenu, now it showed me as the most recent poster.

????? I'm confused.

P.S. The first time I tried to post this, I got a File Locking Error....

I wonder why a program like discus pro uses a text file for the users instead of a database.

It does have a database option, but setting it to work requires an upgrade to the server's perl, which voids our service agreement with Sun/Cobalt and may create problems with how the server functions for other sites on it.

"Web site not responding messages" are also prevalent and can be very misleading since sometimes the board is responding anyway.

Yesterday I received that message twice when trying to post the same message and ended up having my message appear twice immediately after I received a "message already posted" message.

This is all very confusing.
