I'll spare you all the rant, let's just say this is my 3rd defective iPod in 18 months. It is now out of warranty and Apple is so kind to now offer to repair/replace it for the low low price of $249! I'm not too thrilled at the prospect of giving Apple more of my money at this point for something that's going to just quit working after less than 6 months, judging by my track record with these things. Does anyone have any experience with other mp3 players that they like? My preferences are as follows: * Portability, high quality, and higher ( at least 20GB) capacity are important * I really don't care much about the "style" of the iPod or "looking cool" * I do care about the interface and ease of selecting music, playlists, and so forth * I don't give a crap about video and don't want/need a video player * I don't care much about integration with an on-line store like iTunes, I don't like buying music that way * I don't listen to podcasts or audiobooks * I do like to have the desktop and mp3 unit kept in sync the way iTunes does it Anybody using something other than iPod would like to chime in with recommendations, I'd love to hear them! Just looking for a good, solid, basic mp3 player. Thanks!

I'm still interested in anyone's experience with other players. However, I have fixed my iPod by: - opening it up - jiggling things around - putting it back together I'm not kidding!

Why don't you go with the original Ipod - invented by John Lennon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDNcoOjqIXA |

I know a lot of my friends have had the really small rio players, but I have an Ipod Shuffle and nano (mini got stolen) and both are working fine. I'd recomend the Ipod because of its 1 year apple warranty...if it stops working they can basically replace it up to one year. (barring you running it over..dropping it in the ocean etc. |

I like the RCA players. They give you a lot of features for the money. But the user interface isn't great. Apple wins in that area.

My daughter has the Creative Zen Micro -- but I think the hard drive is only 6 GB. I think it has a far more intuitive interface than Apple's. Nice little unit, and the "travel dock" has a great sound for room use. I've noticed SO many closeouts on various units -- a recent article (maybe CNET) noted how many players are defunct (including Sony). Check on buy.com, surpluscomputers.com, newegg.com -- you're bound to find a good unit at a good price. /p |

Thanks for all the suggestions, these look to be the front-also-runners in the arena. |

Cowon's IAudio has some of the best regarded players for sound and flexibility with formats. I recently bought my wife an IAudio U3 2GB flash player. I've had my eye on the X5 HD player that comes in 20, 30 and 60 GB capacities. Its starting to get old in the tooth, but not as old as my Rio Karma. www.dapreview.com is where you can get the latest word on players. Since I save my music in Ogg Vorbis format rather than MP3, I'm also interested in Samsung and iRiver. I'm trying to stay away from Apple because of the whole ITunes DRM scheme as well as their lack of support for various formats. I'm intrigued by a RockBox project that runs open source software on Ipods. http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodPort Its not for those that aren't willing to get their hands dirty. |

A friend of mine uses Napster with a Creative Zen Micro, and she's experiencing recurring problems with the DRM that allows you to play music. Every week or so -- without warning -- she has to sync her Zen with Napster to re-enable the DRM settings on the music. Not a big deal until you're on vacation or away from home without your laptop. Helping her troubleshoot, I've found that many MP3 players have the same problem. It seems to me that the DRM, music-to-go technology has a long way to go until it's truly reliable. Buyer beware! |
