What is Windows Virtual Memory and how do I increse it? Thanks! Also, I've been trying to install 'Norton Go Back' but it won't install due to 'multi boot disk.' What does that mean and how can I correct it? Thanks again. |

Virtual memory is a small amount of hard drive space that the operating system uses; it emulates RAM (very high speed memory), but it is a lot slower since it is disk, of course. http://computer.howstuffworks.com/virtual-memory.htm Increasing the amount of VM that the operating system uses is pretty easy... but why are you doing this? Are you getting error messages? Multi boot discs are somewhat uncommon for a home user; it basicaly means you can boot the computer into several operating systems (or version of OS). It's not something you should be seeing, quite frankly. We can talk, pl me and I'll give you a call. |

Case- I'll PL you. Strange VM is the same a sRAM because I could swear I doubled it last year when I had the other problems. And I have ***lots*** of free space on my hard drive. I asked because I keep getting messages my virtual memory is low or I don't have enough. Could the multi boot problem be related to the inupt work done on my computer by CompUSA last year? I'll PL you but won't be around Sunday. Maybe we call talk Monday mid day? Thanks!

Whoops - VM acts like RAM, it 'emulates' RAM, but it is not the same thing as RAM. VM is disk based (and therefore a lot slower) than system RAM. It is possible that your default VM settings have been changed, which might cause this issue. I remember the Comp USA fiasco, and it sounds like they may have accidentally installed an overlay operating system on your machine. Multi-boot by itself isn't really a huge issue, but the fact that it was done indicates that someone was screwing around a bit too much when working on your problem. (in other words there is absolutely no need to have installed multiple OS on the box, so why the hell did they do it?). Those of you who know me realize that I am almost completely non-judgemental, but I have to say that the Comp USA guys are idiots. I'm not trying to single anyone out here: the Best Buy guys are morons too. And if I had the frequent flyer points available, I'd gladly fly to India and beat the out of Dell's entire support staff. Plus I hate the Sears delivery office. I also really hate AOL. And people who won't let you in when you're merging on to 22 should be put to death. Route 22 is like a natural disaster; even animals stop fighting when faced with a volcano erruption... why not NJ residents? Where was I? Oh yeah - your computer. There's an odd fact about Windows that most of us hate to admit... in some cases, it's easier to just start over than to fix the actual problem. Since it's software it's not THAT big of a deal, but the solution lacks a certain elegance. Somehow it's almost like rebuilding a car engine because it's not running right. I can't say that this is your situation; I'll need to have you do a few things to troubleshoot first. Anyway... I'll send you a PL right now with my contact information and perhaps we can talk late Monday. (I'm kind of tied up most of Monday). We'll see if we can solve this one in a straightforward manner. |
