This started last night. When I right click with my mouse, I get a blank raised box instead of text. Running the cursor over the box from top to bottom reveals the text. This never happened before. Device manager says that the mouse is just fine. Could the problem be elsewhere and if so where? What can I do to correct this? Is it symptomatic or a worse problem and if so what?

Yeah that's not a hardware(mouse) problem, it's a software problem. I don't know what to say...but you may want to check to see if your display settings (for windows...colors themes etc) have been changed accidentally, and if there are color display settings in your web browser of choice.

Glock:

I just tried rebooting and that solved the problem at least for now. I think it may have been some sort of memory problem. Can anyone explain what causes this so i can avoid the problem in the future?

Windows is using a 'handle' for every open window on the screen (and quite often what looks like one window is a collection of many windows). These window handles are a limited resource (especially on win98).
Some buggy programs consume handles and don't release them properly once they don't need them anymore. That's when your problems appears.

Not much you can don there (except re-boot).
If you want to see wich app is consuming the handles, open up task manager.
- ('Start' -> 'Run' -> type 'Taskmgr.exe' -> 'Ok'
- Select the Processes tab
- 'View' -> 'Select Columns'
- Check the box for 'Handle Count' - Click 'OK'

another thing to look out for with this, is Java, I've seen this where Java based applications are the culprit, were you using any at the time?
