I know it has been discussed on here in the past, but I am debating between a 4 GB ipod nano or a 30 GB ipod and wondering what everyone thinks. 4GB nano is $230 30GB ipod is $280 and it includes a case. Is there anything else due out soon? Is the smaller size THAT much of difference? is the bigger storage capacity THAT much of a difference? Preference? Help! |

I figure youll never need more than 8 hours worth of music. And the smaller size is a HUGE difference. (btw the "case" is tiny cloth bag..hardly a case.) Additionally the ipod videos drain the battery like a fiend. Go with a 2 gig nano...the 4 if you really feel it necessary. But the 2 gig has been more than enough for me. (I have the shuffle also, and i had the mini before that ...sadly it was stolen.) |

The difference between Glock's view and mine (which I'll explain) shows how different these gadgets are. I have a 40 GB ipod of the previous generation. It displays pictures but not videos. 8 hours is plenty for a few weeks, but you'll want to swap things in and out. With my ipod, I never have to do that. I'm slowly adding my whole collection into it (and my kids' and my wife's). But I'm in no rush. If I had a nano, I'd have to allot time to do that after I've gotten bored of the 8 hours I was carrying. This means with a nano, you have to spend time fairly regularly -- every two or four weeks -- swapping music on it. I'm not saying that that's bad. But it's there. Obviously, with a nano, you're more likely to have it. That's a huge plus for some people. I don't actually use my ipod as much as some people do. I use it in the car, but only about a quarter of that time, maybe less. I use it most of the time I walk the dog. And that's about it. Younger people have more time where an ipod comes in handy. That's where a nano would be great. Also, mass transit users have more time for listening.

Well, it depends. Are you thinking of the iPod only for music? Smaller is more convenient for fitness activities, running, gym etc. The larger drive allows space for backup, great for displaying digital photos, can be used to display slideshows or even movies on a TV too. The larger display is nice too. There are rumours of a larger-display iPod in the not too distant future, where the display will be almost the size of the iPod itself, and the rumours also suggest a touchscreen interface, kinda cool sounding. Unfortunately, they're only rumours right now, though Apple has applied for various patents of that type. I'd absolutely choose the 30gig iPod. It's not much more expensive, and it offers a lot more. I have a 3rd generation 40 gig iPod, love it, use it in a Bose sound dock, and in the car on long trips with an FM adapter. I don't love the FM thing btw, next car will have an iPod hardwired. |

those rumors of the touch screen iPod of course suggest that Apple thinks people will want to view the downloadable movies from the iTunes store, on that iPod, not to mention music videos. I second what both Tom and Bailey said above |

Has Apple abandoned the concept of a high-capacity device dedicated solely to audio?

Yes, if by high-capacity you mean more than a gig. That is, the iPod Shuffles do just audio and max out at a single gig. The other iPods all can do video, but don't have to, of course. |

Oh and MHD, if music is a huge part of your life, you're definitely going to want the 30GB. But I agree w/ the people longing for just a music player... Also, look into other companies. They lowered the price of the iPod, but it comes with like, nothing now. Just a computer cord and the "case." When I had an iPod, it came with all cords (incl. AV) and a docking station and a real case. I sold my iPod to Tom, and I need to buy something else now - I want something that's just like a plug and play hard drive with headphones... I can't find anything |
