as opposed to the Netgear software, which seems unable to do it properly?

If you right-click on the tray icon in the lower right corner, most software has a menu item 'Use Windows XP Wireless configuration'.

But, it's odd that the Netgear software doesn't do it properly. Usually manufacturer's software works best for the device. Have you visited the manufacturer's website to download the latest stable drivers and software?

That option is not there. Any other suggestions? This started because I downloaded the latest, and since it took over, it only connects for a few minutes at a time before it's kicked off.
