I have a HD here that has a fried chip on the board, would like to find another so that I can swap the boards and attempt to recover data off the drive for a fellow MOL'er.
Below you will find images for the identification of the board, as well as one of the fried chip.

The circuit board is also burnt. Replacing the chip, which could be hard, might not bring the drive back to life. These boards often have many thin layers.

I might have some 2Gig fireballs somewhere. Probably to different though, but I'll check later once I'm home.

I would contact Quantum and ask them A) Can I buy a replacement logic board? Yes, I know there's no warranty, or 2) What model drives have logic boards compatible with this one, so that perhaps I don't have to find the exact same model?

Tom, I wasn't thinking of replacing the chip, except as a last resort perhaps (it may well be slightly easier to just take apart the drive and put the platters in a working drive to get the info off), but if I can find a good board hopefully the drive will spin up.
By the way, I have found out that the Philips chip may be replaced with a Panasonic AN8428NGAK chip.

Earlster, I think you may be right, there may be too much difference.

Photos of the pin connection are below.

I just checked another forum I posted, and someone has a Quantum Fireball 13 gig pulled from a Smurf G3 (or Blue & White G3), this one is a 13 gig from an iMac. That would be the closest match I've found so far, he's willing to ship me the board, but I'm not going to stop looking just yet

Larry, I have thought about contacting Quantum, which was bought by Maxtor in 2000, which has recently been acquired by Seagate, I'm saving that for later.

Looks like you performed an autopsy on that drive already.

I'll check my office and see if we have any Quantum drives. I have a bunch of Deskstar drives that are paperweights. From my previous experience, Quantums are no better.

I guess we're talking about a drive with crucial files on it?

sokay,

well they aren't my files, but they are someone else's on MOL, and I hate to leave a job undone, if I can get it working, and get the files, I will be happy, and I guess someone else will be too.
