For me, search hasn't worked on the board for months. I either get an internal server error or I simply get a hiccup and get thrown back to an empty search screen. I use other boards where search is extremely functional; I assume part of the difficulty is the sw itself. What would it take in terms of $ and time to upgrade MOL to, for example, the sw used by the site Treocentral.com? (check out this site, super functional discussion capability would be great for us.) Maybe as a community, in fact as the at least semi-legendary super-useful virtual community we are, we could band together and marshall the necessary funds (and geeks?) to help upgrade our treasured board? I'd contribute. Would you? Consider well, all. David |

Jamie, maybe you could whip up a form which posts the search criteria to google and put this as a replacement of the MOL search page.

Thanks for raising this. Non-functioning search is a dark corner of an otherwise awesome board. |

another Google way is to use the "inurl:" paramater. Your search entry would be what_you_want_to_find inurl:maplewoodonline.com/forum |

To search just maplewood online, you want the term "site" not "inurl." example: childcare site:southorangevillage.com inurl:childcare would return sites that have the word childcare in the URL. |

It's not working the way I remember it, but try combining the two to narrow in: site:southorangevillage.com inurl:discus restaurant returns just items from the forum site:southorangevillage.com restaurants Also picks up material from the main (non-forum) southorangevillage site. For most terms it's probably unimportant because the forum is so big compared to the parent site. But the second search yields about 200 more results. |

yes it is and for some reason Google doesn't always return messages that I know are here or it points to an URL that drops me in a Topics list |

Every day I need the search function, often multiple times. It doesn't work at all now so what ends up happening is that I duplicate a question/post that simply clogs the servers even more because instead of being able to simply obtain information I know is already on the site I must re-seek the same information. Google is only semi-functional is finding specific strings in the archives which is what we need. Jamie, Dave--you know me as a longtime champion of this virtual place, please tell me, what are the limitations that make search non-functional? Do we need another kind of software to run the board? Is it a financial issue of obtaining new software or hardware? Look at Treocentral.com for an example of really great software for discussion/posting. This real world community wants to help our virtual community. Please tell us what we can do to fix the problem. Chime in, others--would you help? Thanks and search well, all. David |

The software used by treocentral is not better for many reasons, but mostly because it tends to need constant patching for security issues. It's administrative features are also not as good as our present system and we use this message board's login system for many other features on the site. The next update of this software appears to have some help for searching, so just hang in there a bit longer.

Dave: Many thanks for responding. I absolutely defer to your professional knowledge re the sw; security issues must be a (the?) *itch in any IT work. In terms of usability the TreoCentral board is super friendly and functional, I must say. What is this kind of sw called and are these 2 (MOL &TC) examples of market leaders? I often see what seems to be the TreoCentral sw, characterized by page lower left "You may (or may not) post, reply, etc,,", giving you immediate feedback on your privileges. I am so heartened to hear you say that searching is to improve. Why does it work for a while and then break--seems so arbitrary? Again, the reply is most appreciated as is glimpsing the light at the end of the search tunnel! Thanks and secure well, all. David |
