I've been asked to conduct a poll: how many of you watch TV while you drive?

Jeez folks, leave the damn panel TV's to the kiddies in the back seat. Begin to exercise some friggin common sense while driving.

I am sure this retailer give a whole list of legally obligated cautions, and the buyer just tosses them into the console mounted paper shredder, next to their cappuccino machine and sticky bun warmer.

Drive and get where you're going, then watch TV!

PS: The only screen I look at while driving is the navigation display, and our manufacturer has a lock out where you can't input data once the car is going over 10 mph.

OK, I'll take this one:

Ligeti, who exactly asked you to conduct this poll?

He probably wasn't asked...It came up as part of a discussion in the cell phone thread in soapbox. I made the statement that the TV being there is not a guarantee that they will watch it while driving.

The Chrysler 300C has the OEM Nav unit manufactured by Alpine with Navteq software. It is a DVD based system and requires periodic upgraded discs as roads and service change.

The other car has an aftermarked Lowrence I-way 500. This is real time satellite driven and downloads all the current road information to an internal hard drive.

Chrysler model B+, Lowrance A.

Navigation is very helpful down here in Florids because we didn't have much experience on roads and locations in our new area.

It's also a lot of fun to hear it try to pronounce the names of Chinese restaurants.

Guys, you're far better off with old-fashioned folding maps. Simply pull off to the side of the road, and you'll end up with high quality, low tech geographical information. These satellite devices are notoriously inaccurate, and are a big distraction to drivers.

OK, I am going to paraphrase Ligeti's question:

How many idiots watch TV while driving? Isn’t that the real question?

Isn't that illegal, anyway? It boggles the mind that there should be a law to tell people that this type of behavior is so unbelievably idiotic. There should be a law that allows people with common sense to pull out those idiots out of their cars and smack some sense into them. Not that I am condoning any violence here, but it just seems, well, deserving.

"These satellite devices are notoriously inaccurate". Yawn. More inane drivel.

There is a certain kind of personality that is compulsively addicted to electronic devices, and specifically to computer and TV screens.

Yes, compulsive behavior is a sad, sad thing.

So you order one of these things from "mobilevideo" and instruct yourself not to watch it?

Does that make sense - to anyone in this universe?

Ligeti,

You couldn't be any further from accurate. Both our nav systems are quite accurate and not at all intrusive. It is far more distracting to be looking for an address while driving, than being told, "destination in 100 feet, on the right."

I never found myself to be compulsively drawn to "electronic devices, and specifically to computer and TV screens."

Enjoy your paper maps with the frayed folds. I don't think electronics manufacturers rely on your patronage to begin with. Oh, did you get the daily ice delivery for your icebox?

How odd - someone caught Ligeti in (another) incorrect fact... and instead of addressing the issue, he started a new thread quoting from his favorite book.

Very, very strange... not like Ligeti at all!

I hope that sometime soon there's another startling revelation - perhaps something along the lines of, "Not all cell phone calls are emergencies"?

Can you guys just answer the question? Do you or don't you watch TV while you drive?

I'm getting some heat to finish this poll. So far, I have two respondents.

Well there is at least one person that I'm aware of who watches TV while driving.

Perhaps you should interview him for your survey...

I have nothing against devices that give the driver directions to a destination. But I do think watching videos/TV while driving should be illegal.

The other day I was driving behind a car that didn't seem to be driving straight within the lane, when I passed it on the left lane, I saw the driver had a book on top of the wheel between her hands and she was reading while driving. I find that scary!

Did you hear about the NBA player who crashed his car while watching tv? He was drunk and watching... um.... adult programming. And he was.... very engaged with the video (nudge, nudge, hint, hint, wink, wink)... and proceeded to crash into another car.

Happened just a couple weeks ago. While among the stupidest things I have ever heard, I also think occurance was completely inevitable.
