I can use the fingerpad mouse and click, but the keys have absolutely no effect, except the ESC key, which does put the thing into hibernate. I need my laptop!!! |

Same thing. I managed to type a z into the browser, but then it froze up again. It's also making so tiny crackling noises, like little insects having swordfights. Kinda like the guy in your new avatar. Luckily for work tonight I only need the mouse pad! |

Sounds like a hardware problem..a serious one...discontinue use of it immediately...and take it to a service center. those crackling noises could be electrical problems or your motherboard frying..which would be an electrical problem...do not...use |

as glock said, crackling isn't good. there used to a virus out there that disabled the keyboard, but I doubt if that's it. |

NOT the one in town. All I know of is mailing it to the manufacturer. (we are too tech-adept in this house to really need service...i dont know of any other than that.) |

too tech adept, so you will troubleshoot her laptop down to the chip, diode, capacitor, transistor, blown wire tracing (for whatever reason), and then replace it if needed, desoldering and soldering the replacement part/parts (making sure you use the appropriate heat sink device of course)? Of course most people don't do that, they just narrow it down to the largest part and then replace as needed. I have no personal experience with anyone in the area besides myself, but it sounds like you may need to take it somewhere where they can at least try another keyboard to see if that is the only problem, unless of course it's under warranty, then contact the company or manufacturer you purchased it through or have the warranty from. I have heard good things about TanMax (I think that's right) over on Springfield, if you would like me to take a look at it for you feel free to shoot me a PM . Of course if you need it for tomorrow I guess it won;t do you any good though, do you have a USB keyboard, you could always take a chance and try connecting it to the laptop and using it tomorrow, but I wouldn't, I would use it while you can now and copy the relevant files off of the laptop (& backup everything else), and see about borrowing another laptop tomorrow, or worst case a desktop. |

I can always revert to slide projectors and "pulling slides" before class. Monster, I;m curious, about that old virus that kills the keyboard, why don't you think that's what happened? I don't understand why the escape key would work if the rest of the thing is fried. It may very well be under warranty. Too bad I never finished unpacking my file boxes when we moved here. Still, Dell may know if I call them.

Slide Projectors > how retro old virus > if you have any type of virus protection and it is up to date I would imagine the definitions for it are included, an/or the exploit for it has been fixed by now, this was several years ago. Escape Key > It is most possible that the escape key could be the only working key you rightous babe you. For example, on a spare (family/guest) iBook I have, the ribbon cable leading from the keyboard to the connector for the computer has a blown wire tracing in it, this is stopping the spacebar, contol, and fn keys from working. Under warranty > Dell can definitely tell you if it's still under warranty. Question > Are you sure nothing got spilled on your laptop's keyboard, that's what happened to mine. |

Spilled...though the odds of things getting spilled in this hous are VERY HIGH (code orange???) what with all the coffee, beer and juice boxes around, I don't think that this happened. No traces of moisture. I was running some anti-spyware program when the comuter froze. I picked it up off the chair (wooden) where it was sitting and the fan was running but the thing was very very hot hot (It was so hot in my computer the equatorial zones experienced a deep freeze that day...) I couldn't turn the thing off so I had to unplug and pull out the battery to reboot. Im gonna call Dell now. Thanks for the input. PS: my subscription to Norton has been expired for some time now... |

That was my thought it sounds like a spill which would explain the crackling sound. Dry out the keyboard with a hair dryer and then restart it with an external keyboard to see whether functionality returns. |

It sounds like your motherboard is frying. Once again...my only advice is discontinue use and get it serviced ASAP. |

If only George Clinton would funk me and my computer on up to the Mothership, I might be able to get a downstroke on the keyboard to work! |

Well, thanks for praying for me! A miracle has occured. After 2 hours online "chat" with some guy at Dell, and passing all diagnostic tests the thing is working again. Still no clue as to why. Maybe it was moisture... Looks like I won't be needing the board, Glock. Thanks anyway. |
