Very basic question: Do i have to register with google to ensure that my Web site will come up during a search or is it enough that it's up and "out there". Thanks

Google will only find it if you've registered, or some site it's indexing links to you. It's easy to submit, why not just do it?

Try this in the entry field: "site:mysite.com"

You don't need to submit the site, but you can if it feels empowering.

Google is a bit crazy. I have a site that last week was number one for the search term and then went 3 pages into results, then popped back to number one and now is on page 2 of results. I think the reason for this is that Google uses a cluster of thousands of PCs rather than a single mainframe to run searches and cache results, so I'm actually querying a different server and results matrix each time I search. Only Google knows for certain how it works.
