My son put a mini-disk (baseball card) into the disk drive. It disappeared inside somewhere, and obviously now I can't insert anything else. The drawer slides open & closed; can't see anything to remove. To the shop? |

Yeah. Unless you are comfortable removing the drive yourself and fishing it out. |

If it's a tray load iMac than the mini disc should have worked no problem, there is that little circle that it fits into (or rectangular shaped indention), you say that the tray opens & closes, what exactly happens when you pop another cd into the tray and try to close it, it tries to close gets partially closes and pops open, closes all the way & opens, closes and just sits there while it tries to spin up and then opens, or does it just sit there and doesn't spin up? If you are absolutely sure the disk is in there, try tilting the iMac, bang (not to hard) directly at the tray opening, then try opening it to see if the cd has fallen into place. If it doesn't, tip the other direction and thump the Imac, then try tipping forward over the edge of the desk and thump & open. If the card somehow fell through the tray (I can't see this, since that's where are the gear mechanisms are, and you say the drive opens & closes)), when it's open get a flashlight and tweezers, if you can see the CD in there somewhere, try to coax it out. Now if this were a slot loading iMac, I would say that your best bet would be to put double sided tape around a butter knife, putty knife, piece of cardboard, something rigid and thin, and try to use it to get the CD out, after of course using a paperclip to press the small eject button a few times to see if the CD works itself out enough to pull out with tweezers or even your fingers. I've had to use the double sided tape method before, and it's a well known remedy on the net for CD's stuck in slot loaders. Let me know if you need assistance. |

It's got to be in there. can't see it with a flashlight. The tray opens; I can insert another; it closes all the way and tries to spin up; then gives up and spits the new one out. How difficult is it to remove the drive for a handy person like me, but a techno-nothing ("just make it work")? |

Which imac is it? I've taken apart a 1998 model. The first time took a long time. I have a service manual for that model. Or I could help. I can now get it open and closed in about 20 minutes. Here are some imac images to give us an idea of which imac model it is: http://images.google.com/images?client=opera&rls=en&q=imac&sourceid=opera&oe=UTF -8&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi

I had a feeling it may be one of those, it's not that difficult, go to this page, http://www.r3uk.co.uk/content/view/51/61/ for a take apart guide, it's pretty simple, you should also go to Radio Shack and get some heat transfer grease, unless you have some. O f course it may be a little more difficult taking the drive apart, the good thing is that you probably only have to take it apart part of the way.

While you are at it, you may want to think about upgrading with a better drive too. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/powermac/ |
