Kind of reminds me of my experiences with the IT department at a large, well, let's just say "national security" organization I worked for. They were constantly updating and reconfiguring our computers. With each "upgrade," I lost important functions. When I complained that I couldn't do #@%*&$ (redacted, for security reasons), the response was always, "That's because we upgraded you!" Reject imbecilic computer upgrades. |

um, Ligeti do you have any idea what the worse is better approach is? I have to think you’re just commenting to comment. This has nothing to do with upgrades. It has to do with initial development. Computers move ahead to quickly to spend 3 years in development. The New Jersey method means, get it out to the user quickly because in 2 years there will be something else. |

Brett - no offense, but how dare you claim that Ligeti is talking just to hear the sound of his own voice? (So to speak). I for one am outraged - if it wasn't for Ligeti, how would we know that cell phones can be annoying? Who would have told us that you shouldn't watch television while driving if Ligeti hadn't stepped up to the plate? I won't even BEGIN to talk about his warnings concerning potato chip bags or hard-to-operate copy machines! Let's not forget the fact that if it weren't for Ligeti constantly quoting from the book "Future Hype", we all might have been forced to go out and purchase our own copies. But no - his tireless (some may say repetitive, even compulsive) railing against technology has saved each of us at least $20. Frankly, I think you owe him an apology. Just think of how much less useful this website would be without Ligeti's illuminating posts.

So let's stop waiting for computer technology to serve us, and start on our preordained path -- serving the computers. If an upgrade interferes with your work, maybe you weren't doing the right work after all. It reminds me of the Office upgrade I had many years ago. I asked if I'd still have my contacts, and was assured I would. Post-upgrade I didn't. But it was alright that I had to spend extra time on every letter I sent out to port in addresses because it served a higher calling. Conform ... conform ... obey ... obey. |

Two independent sources reported to me that Case was sighted reading this important book on a NJ Transit train last week. He was apparently sitting in a remote section of the last car, and both agents observed a scowling expression on his face. Reject computers computing things that don't need to be computed. |

Shouldn't this kind of post be in 'soapbox'? Unless we can establish a "Repetitive and useless drivel" area, of course.... ... though I have to give Ligeti credit for laughing at himself - now he can join the rest of us, who have been laughing at him for quite some time! |

I still have a bunch of sliderules / sliding calculators here at home - they don't require electricity and will be usefull when the invasion comes. I still need to learn glass blowing so I can make my own valves (tubes), although I suspect if I wanted to build a transmitter from scratch I would use a spark-gap and CW. I've talked to a bunch of people lately who are programmers who have no real grasp of what computer memory is. They just don't get it. They don't understand how you could build a digital memory or even what things like core memory are / how they worked. These programmers have degrees in computer science. It's truely scary. Analog computers are even more alien to most people. http://sci-toys.com/scitoys/scitoys/radio/homemade_radio.html --Tarp |

On Worse-Is-Better. One key thing about WIB is the idea of incremental improvement. Rather than trying to make the software fit all the side-cases make it do a few things well. If the side-cases become important someone will improve that functionality. It's a good idea in general. Choose an area and do it well. Contrast the idea of a tool that does at least something well with a tool that trys to do all things, and none well. WIB and Open Source go together really well. You let experts in specific problem domains fix the parts that matter to them. WIB doesnt work so well with non open-source because your stuck with the tool so it better do what you want and do it right or your SOL. --Tarp |
