I want Explorer to launch Yahoo! mail when I click on an email link on a page. Instead it launches Outlook. I went to Tools/Internet Options/Programs/email but the drop down didn't include Yahoo! mail and I can't figger out how to add it. Any suggestions how to change the default email program? THANKS. |

You mean you want it to launch a web page that goes to the Yahoo mail site and starts a composition? I don't know how to do that. I wonder if it's possible at all. But you could configure Outlook so that it sends as your Yahoo address. Or you could configure a better mailer, such as Thunderbird, to do the same and set Thunderbird to be the default mailer.

Soulful... I had (am having) the same problem when I got rid of Earthlink. I uninstalled software (and I tried tried to cancel the account, but they talked me into staying on for free for a year...similar to the AOL story a couple of days ago...but I digress...). Seems like I've tried EVERYTHING to get either hotmail or my netzero email set as the default. Nothing has worked. The earthlink default was established with the software they gave me. That was no problemo. This current situation is very frustrating because I can't send anything by email drectly from a software program (like Quicken). |

You can set your default mail program on per user basis with DefaultMail assuming of course that you have tried to change it via the internet options control panel, under the programs tab |

Monster, thenks, but I don't see how DefaultMail helps. I have my browser in place. UNLESS I'M ALREADY IN YAHOO! MAIL, when I click a CONTACT US button with an email link, Outlook launches. I want Yahoo mail to launch. This may not be possible because Yahoo mail is not a program, per se, but a web page. If I'm missing something, please explain. |

OK, so that's out. What about setting up Yahoo as an IMAP account in Outlook? |

Soulful, I was addressing Shanbananna, but it probably wont' help her either, she could set all settings to the default winduds settings, restart, then try changing the settings again. Doesn't work, how about some registry hacks? |

create a new mail account, but instead of choosing POP choose IMAP when given the choice, carry on. But I think that you need a paid Yahoo account to access Yahoo Mail via IMAP. |

Go into Outlook and set up a new account. When it asks if you want a POP3 or IMAP type account, select the latter. Enter yahoo username and password. Get Yahoo mail in Outlook. |

Says here, http://help.yahoo.com/mail/pop/pop-06.html that you can POP it
Quote:Yahoo! Mail users can read their email in Outlook Express by subscribing to the Yahoo! Mail Plus service. This service allows you to use Outlook Express or another POP3 client to access and manage your Yahoo! Mail messages. If you are a Mail Plus user, then follow the directions outlined below: Outlook Express allows you to add a new email account to your existing profile. This means you do not have to replace your current settings in order to send and receive Yahoo! Mail messages. Here's how: From the Tools menu, choose "Accounts." Select the "Mail" tab. Click the "Add" button. From the Add menu, click "Mail." In the text box labeled Display Name, type your name and click "Next." In the Email Address box, type your Yahoo! Mail address (be sure to include "@yahoo.com") and click "Next." Under "My incoming mail server is a..." select "POP3." Type "pop.mail.yahoo.com" in the Incoming Mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) Server box. Type "smtp.mail.yahoo.com" in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server box. Click "Next." In the Account Name box, type your Yahoo! Mail ID (your email address without the "@yahoo.com"). In the Password box, type your Yahoo! Mail password. If you want Outlook Express to remember your password, check the "Remember password" box. Do not check the boxes labeled "Log on using Secure..." Click "Next." Click "Finish." Important: The Yahoo! Mail SMTP server now requires authentication. To turn this setting on: From the Tools menu, choose "Accounts." Select the "Mail" tab. Double-click the account labeled "pop.mail.yahoo.com." Select the "Servers" tab. Check the box next to "My Server Requires Authentication." Click "OK." To control deletion of messages from the Yahoo! Mail Server: From the Tools menu, choose "Accounts." Select the "Mail" tab. Double-click the account labeled "pop.mail.yahoo.com." Select the "Advanced" tab. In the Delivery section at the bottom of the window, check "Leave a copy of messages on server" if you want to save your Yahoo! Mail messages on the Yahoo! Mail server as well as on your local computer. Do not check this box if you want your messages to be deleted from the Yahoo! Mail server once you have received them in Outlook Express. If your ISP blocks port 25 or if you're unable to send email, then you will need to use port 587 when sending via Yahoo!'s SMTP server. To make this change, please follow the directions below: From the "Tools" menu, select "Accounts" Select your Yahoo! POP account and click on the "Properties" button Click on the "Advanced" tab Next to "Outgoing server (SMTP), change port 25 to 587 Click "Apply", then click "OK" and "Close"

That's not how browsers work because of how the mailto: protocol is handled. I think it's for security and liability reasons. |
