I am looking to buy a new laptop and am considering these two. Would appreciate any others you might recommend (except for Dell laptops, which I do not like). Thoughts??? THANKS! 1. Toshiba Satellite® Notebook PC (M55-S3315) from Circuit City for $800. Pentium® M processor 740 (1.73GHz), 2MB L2 cache, 1024MB of DDR SDRAM, 100GB 5400RPM hard drive. DVD+/-R/RW/CD-RW 14" WXGA display featuring TruBrite™ and TFT. Small, but light http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Toshiba-Satellite-Notebook-PC-M55-S3315-/sem/rpsm /oid/141558/catOid/-12963/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do 2. HP dv5000z from HP online for about $800-900 - AMD Turion 64 ML-34 (1.8GHz/1MB L2 Cache), 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen, 1.0GB DDR SDRAM (2x512MB), 1 GB hard drive, DVD writer http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/store_access.do?template_type=cto_sto re&sto_cto=ES186AV&brand_name=hp%20%20%20%20%20%20&aoid=11232&cs=mySimon%2FCNET |

We have two Toshiba Satellites. They have been AMAZING. One is an old Black and White running Windows 3.0 and the other is a slightly newer one running ME. I would DEFINITELY reccomend the Toshiba. |

I would go for the HP if only for the 64bit processor - this way in another year you can just (while application software catches up) load the 64 bit version of Windows XP - if you go with the Intel Pentium M you are looking at early obsolescence. The other area you want to examine is the LCD monitor - make sure you get the upgrade screen option for the monitor. |

Thanks for your advice. Is the Turion the way to go now because it is 64 bit or is there some other chip I should consider? |

I concur with Toshiba being much better than HP in the laptop arena. Toshiba practically wrote the book on how to build a laptop. A fancy processor isn't worth much if a system isn't reliable.

I also believe that the Toshiba laptops are terrific. I have an M55-S3292 and I love it. |

jeffl, I've had mixed results with Dell laptops, but you got a good deal. Some of them do well. Don't regret your recent purchase.
