I'm a bit clueless about media servers and am wondering if they are what I need? We have a wireless network, IPOD's, and a large CD collection. Ideally, I would like to get all of our CD's downloaded onto a hard drive with the ability to listen to them on our home stereo. Also, I would like a device that I can backup any kind of data file onto. Most of the little I have trolled through online is about TV and video content storage, which may also be nice to have. Does anyone have any advice as to where to start looking at this and some resources or services I could use to help me figure it out/ set it up? Thanks |

Well, a Mac Mini is perfect for this (and now with Intel chips you can always run Windows on it if you must), with a miniStack even better. A couple of links http://www.pvrblog.com/pvr/2005/01/mac_mini_a_kill.html http://www.engadget.com/2005/01/25/how-to-turn-your-mac-mini-into-a-media-center / http://www.macmerc.com/articles/Freeloader_Friday_Download_of_the_Week/264 http://www.macworld.com/2006/05/features/multimediamini/index.php?pf=1

Check out the forum on slimdevices.com They are the makers of Squeezebox a great wireless music distribution box that is open source. A lot of people hack/mod Buffalo Technology external drives so that they can serve music to the Squeezebox even when the PC is turned off (this is documented on the forum I listed). I've been wanting a solution like that - preferably without having to do the hack, but I haven't taken the plunge. So far my PC HD is the storage medium for serving the Squeezebox. It is very easy to add internal and/or external storage to a PC these days. |

Hey davel, This is cool... my cd player is ancient and I am looking for a similar solution... What format do you keep your music in? MP3 or some other loss less format? I think at some point I will use their ripping service http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_ripping.html |
