Hey Tom, I remember you saying you had an iMac beastie. Did you put OSX on it or something more lightweight?

I did. It's a 233 MHz Bondi Blue iMac. I had to load MacOS 10.3 on it several times to get it right. It was really hard with a 4 GB disk, so I dug up a 40 GB disk and used that.

Noticing I still wasn't using the machine, I loaded Ubuntu Linux on it. That works fine, though I can't say it's much faster. And after finally having changed my habit from using the ctrl key for everything to using the Apple key, I had to switch back with Linux.

And now I notice I'm still not using this machine. It's slow and noisy and uses about 100 watts. Maybe one day I'll find a use for it. It sure looks handsome.

I have a dual processor Sparc clone that is much the same - Tatung U2MP. It has a gig of ram, dual Ultrasparc II 360 cpu's (4megs cache on each), and is in general a pretty good sparc box. Trouble is it is insanely loud and a power hog. It's probably on a par than a Dual core P4... you get the idea.

It is a machine suited to keeping an arctic research lab warm - If they had excess electricity available from say a spare nuclear-reactor.

When I'm not crunching data I really want a box that uses say 1W, is all solid-state and has say battery backed up RAM.

At least your Mac power usage includes the monitor. My Tatung gets toasty headless.

How much power does it consume?

A colleague of mine is giving away a four-processor sparc 20. Interested?

You may want to restore an old laptop for your purposes, if "crunch power" isn't that important. The battery is almost like a UPS.

Do you have a wattmeter? I like my Kill A Watt which measures watts, volts, kilowatt-hours, and maybe more.

Actually, there are TWO systems, each a four-processor sparcstation 20. Are you interested?

Tom,

I need to exercise restraint collecting the beasties. I don't actually have a wattmeter here - been meaning to get one for ages.

Dunno how much juice they suck but judging by the heat I would guess that doing a nice big compile or raytrace on it (both CPU's loaded up) it's GOTTA be > 300 watts. It has respectible memory bandwidth if I remember rightly - about half my Duron 1200, which isn't bad considering the vintage.

I wonder if your mate has upgraded those 20's to 4 x 200 Mhz Hypersparc CPU's - that would officially make Glocks chopping em into peecees a truely wicked crime.

Glock - Dunno if you could cram everything into the '20 case. You might get somewhere if you started with a laptop...

Why are there no Apple G4 or G5 machines used?
Still in high demand? I'd love to get a used one for desktop video to replace my ancient Quadra 840AV w/ Radius VideoVison digitizer.

Politicalmon, check out: http://www.lowendmac.com/deals.shtml

Glock, I hope you realize that the sparcstation is 100% PC-INcompatible.

Ah if they're gone that's ok. We were gonna take em to my friend and his dad and see what we could do. They work on computers in their basement (we're talking 5 or 6 computers sitting down there right now being worked on...each one serves a different purpose...hardware testing, software testing, OS testing etc etc)
