The generous organization that donates millions of dollars of PCs to a school district may be killing with kindness. The total cost of ownership of a PC is much more than the cost of the PC itself. The million dollar donation condemns the school to spending perhaps half that much each year forever to satisfy ongoing needs for software, training, support and upgrades.
Bob Seidensticker, Future Hype: The Myths of Technology Change - Everything You Thought You Knew About Technology Change is Wrong

"Donating books and reference volumes with useful, accurate information is much better for students than more stupid computers. Computers erode attention spans and dull critical thinking skills. Nothing is more impressive than students who know how to find information the old-fashioned way."
Ligeti, Low Technology Advocate, Public Safety Coordinator

Reject computers computing things that don't need to be computed.

Is anyone else convinced that Ligeti is Bob Seidensticker, promoting his book?

Nah, just more sad nonsense. I'm sure it'll go away sooner or later.

Well, our school district must be be a believer in Mr. Seidensticker's view. Technology has been cut with the elimination of techs for the elementary schools. No more computer labs. While the labs (brand new Dells at Tuscan)will physically be there, teachers won't take students in for lessons on the computers. The computers will be used, when possible, during library periods.

Kids will pick up computer skills anyway. Computers are pervasive in todays society. Most kids in this area probably know other kids with computers.

If we were way out in the boonies, and the primary source of income was agriculture then I would be more worried, but you can bet that lots of parents and friends have computers. Many parents probably use computers daily.

IMHO I just wish there were $100 systems out there that had a simple kernel in ROM and say a logic programming language or even a scheme interpreter.

Then you would have some really saavy kids writing software that was better than 90% of the stuff written by older professionals who have had their thinking constrained by too many years of imperative programming. (Self included).
