AOL for years has only been useful to me for occasional dial-up access when traveling and broadband is not available. As this need has lessened over time I now resent AOL EVEN MORE!! Anyone have ideas re: A.) Pay-as-you-go dial-up access through any service not requiring monthly subscription or B.) Now that AOL will let you keep email addresses after quitting (see today's Times) will they let you dial up on a pay-as-you-go basis? Thanks and compute well, all. David

I don't know of a pay as you go service, but I believe NetZero is only $10 a month. I know nothing about these but I found this: http://www.virgin.net/internetaccess/payasyougo/ http://www.slingshot.com/ |

I've been wondering that, too. As far as I know, there isn't anyone who offers exactly that. I have even searched. I found some hits with "occasional dialup" as the search terms, but they are local ISP's. I think the closest thing is to use AOL at $5 per month which includes a few hours, I don't know how many. And I think it's $1/hour if you go over. Hmm, maybe you can use AOL as a free trial if it's really occasional. They may remember your credit card number from one trial to the next, so you can do this as many times as you have credit cards. I've heard bad stories, however, of telling them that you want to cancel and them not taking you off, and then they charge you for several months.

Suggest you visit Freedomlist.com. They do a great comparison of ISPs. |
