So Mrs. FW had to upgrade her Norton A/V and purchased Personal Firewall along with Systemworks. So the whole system crashes and I have to spend several hours trying to get the damn thing just to boot into Safe Mode. I would like to try a new A/V software. Any ideas?

AVG Antivirus is great. And it's free! You can pay for the full version however there are enough free firewall and spyware software that why bother paying. Here's the link:

Norton crashed three of our computers non stop until we removed it and switched over to AVG. Since then, zero problems.

McAfee sucks almost as bad as Norton, AVG is great, and you will find that it's mostly a matter of taste, or no taste as to what one likes.
Dave's answer is good, but I still run ClamXAV on my Mac, only because I tend to download windows items on them and transfer to a PC.

Something else you may want to consider is Ewido, and NOD32.

Keep in mind that not just one utility will necessarily catch everything,
Here are some links that may be of interest.

I second Avast. It think it is far better than Norton (I use Norton at work).

Dave, you put up a link saying "Best Antivirus" but when I clicked on it I got sent to a web page spewing verbal diarrhea with pictures of warm vomit. Just thought I would let you know of your mistake.

I've used their website AV checker. It's great to use on machines where you don't want to install a full blown AV checker. However it's a long download.

Never tried their full product.

I've tried it a couple of times, their antivirus is good, but the last time I tried it it wouldn't perform automatic scans, manual only. I also found that I was continuously having problems with conflicts, though this could have been due to the software configuration we were using.
Didn't make use of their other products (Firewall, Antispam, AntiSpyware) since there are others out there that are better, but maybe things have changed in the last year or so.

At my last job, my company rolled out a big installation of Trend Micro's product. Or one of them. It had scheduled scans, the time of which the user couldn't control. In a corporate setting, that's mostly a good thing. My experience with it was that other than the Thursday-at-noon scans, I didn't notice the product. That is to say it did its job dutifully and flawlessly.
