My parents, retired, do not currently have online access at home.

My Dad is in the hospital, and I'm thinking of getting him a SIMPLE PC connected to the web for when he gets home and is recuperating. It would be ideal if I could set it up with a webcam (so we could do "video phones" from my house to theirs).

I see 768 Kbps Verizon DSL is available to them -- considering they wouldn't know even *what* to download -- is this fast enough for comfortable web surfing, emailing, etc?

thx /Pete

Yeah, 768K is fine for most purposes, really, and especially your parents. I think it's a fine idea.

The idea I question is, what is a simple PC? They all run Windows. There is no Windows-for-Dummies version, as far as I know.

Right Tom, I cringe at the idea of "upgrading" my Dad to a Windows XP machine!

But I nothing about Apples, so would be at a loss to help him with a MAC machine.

I guess I should tell him to keep his fax machine ;-)

If his fax machine ain't broke, ...

Or you could buy two macs, one for you, and one for him. For people like that, it does make a substantive difference. And sorry to say, so does AOL. My 79-year-old father in law asked for advice. Should he change from Mac to PC? I said absolutely not, and this was BEFORE I was a Mac disciple. Same goes for AOL.

Pete, Apple's iMac and MacBook laptop come with built-in webcams, and a great app called iChat, which is compatable with AOL's Instant Messenger, and makes video conferencing very easy and fun. We do that a lot with our daughter and 19 month old grandchild, always works great.

The Mac OS is easy to use, not THAT different from a PC, except it won't crash, there are no viruses or spyware.

Stop in the Apple Store in Short Hills and check them out.

The 768kbps DSL should be adequate, and if you decide to go with a Mac and have a question, there are lots of VERY knowledgeable Mac users here on MOL.

If you're looking for simple, you can't beat the Mac.
