I'm somewhat new to this board and not too computor savy. I just posted this in the please help thread. Any thoughts When attempting to open a pdf, my screen just goes white with the exception of a small black box (upper left) with a blue triangle, red square, an a green dot inside of it. My computor savy neighbor said thats what Acrobat Reader is for. I know I had it because every time I use to try it it would open Reader. I downloaded Reader again but still no luck. Any ideas?? The only other thing I did recently was adjusted my browser settings because I was suddenly unable to access banking info and I had to be "walked" through it by the bank (they apparently changed their system??) Any help for a computor dummy like me?? |

If you have the most recent version of Acrobat Reader installed, my suggestion is to right-click on the file you want to open, select "Open With" and choose acrobat reader. If that's not working, I'd think the .pdf you're trying to open is corrupt. Can you try and open it from another computer, or maybe re-install the document or download it again? Can you open any .pdf files? I've attached a test file, see if it opens.

Nope, didn't work. Thanks for your reply Bailey, but still, no-go. I must have done something dumb. I trust the content of these pdf's and don't believe they are corrupt. |

Did you try clicking on the .pdf I posted? It should open in your browser, in a new window. If that works, try using your browser to open your file. My .pdf was created on a Mac, about as trust-worthy as a file can be. |

I was able to view it but only after I saved it as a file. That seems like a PITA though. There must be a setting somewhere that was touched but for the life of me can't figure it out. Thanks for your help! |

Did you complete;y uninstall Reader, then try a reinstall? You can go through the add or remove programs utility in the control panel, if that doesn't work you cna do it manually and then reinstall. Adobe has the instructions here, http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/327675.html Are you trying to view pdf files in your browser window, or with Reader itself, is the plugin installed, is Acrobat ActiveX installed and active, and...is the pdf file you are trying to open from a website? If it's on a website perhaps the server is unable to serve the file for some reason, the file may be corrupted, this page may be of particular help to you, http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/328233.html if the above link doesn't help, start here for Adobe's Acrobat support pages, http://www.adobe.com/support/products/acrreader.html |

Question.. do you have only one browser? It sounds like your browser's settings aren't right. If you have Firefox or Opera you might try one instead if IE. |

Thanks for the help Monster & others. Don't yell at me if I can't answer everything, but hear goes. what operating system are you using? A). Windows 98 I currently use Comcast (high speed)?? I could not open up my on line banking info so I called and they walked me through screens I've never seen before (which isn't anything new), and I changed several settings. I never wrote down what I was changing because it worked. I went into tools, then internet options, then security, then custom level then a page came up with various settings. I changed what ever they told me (which were about five or six different things. Thanks for your help! |

The best thing you can do for yourself right now is pick up a copy of Windows XP. 98 has no way to track who is logging into your system, which is a major security hole if you're on a 24/7 connection. |

Thanks everyone! Problem solved. I'm not sure how I did it (because I did this more than twice) but I had to un-install Reader, then re-install it. For some reason it acted differently this time and took much longer to do. Anyhow........... Thanks again! I'm fairly new to this board but If you'll have me, I'd like to buy you three an adult beverage. Just tell me where & when. Regards! Robert O |

Congrats, Robert, glad that problem is solved. I've heard you can find Monster and Dave at Bunny's, um.. pretty much all the time! (Well, often anyway). Welcome to MOL, btw. Lots of good folks here (and a few that will make you crazy at times). It's always good to raise a pint with another Irishman, maybe one of these days Bunny's will have another MOL party, hopefully with MOL nametags.
