I've had the same 2 or 3 pieces of spam coming every night from the same sender for a couple of years now. It's frustrates the heck out of me. I mentioned it in the past and Tom Reingold said he might have some suggestions. Tom please help.

I'm using Apple's Mail and I do know how to use the filters but don't see any way to filter these messages. If at all possible I would like to do the filtering using Mail and not have to install or run another app. I do mark the messages as JUNK in Mail and with a years worth of training it sometimes recognizes the new messages as junk. Sometimes. I'm using Mail version 1.311 (I am still running 10.3.9 and if you tell me that 10.4's version of Mail would fix my problem than it might be just the right impetus for me to finally switch. Well...maybe.

The email messages very often have attachments but not always. The name of the sender ALWAYS changes, and the subject line is always different random words from the dictionary. But the two messages seem to always come at the same time and sometimes it is arrives in the middle of the night.

I am going to paste in the headers of the email messages and maybe it will help in figuring out how to eradicate these messages from littering my inbox. Any support would be TRULY and UTTERLY appreciated.

I use Entourage at work and am not a big fan of it (or most M$oft products). Having said that, these emails I THINK are all claiming to come from different domain names. Also Apple Mail I believe lets you filter all messages from a particular domain too (the filter would be FROM CONTAINS domain.com message equals junkmail)

That's one of the shortcomings of Apples Mail, there really isn't an effective way to handle SPAM such as that with Apple;s Mail.
I had a couple of those pesky emails too, always showing as from a different domain, and always (or at least usually) with an attached jpeg that contained the actual text of the SPAM in it. I couldn't get Mail to recognize the email as Junk without filtering all email with jpegs as Junk, so I installed SpamSieve.
After a short training period I realized I haven't seen any of these emails in awhile, I had forgotten all about them until reading this post.

Something you may want to check in your Mail preferences is that the option to Trust Junk mail headers set by my Internet Service Provider is checked.

I'll keep SpamSieve in mind but I am holding out hope that Tom has an idea or two first. I'm going to rely on another application to do the filtering as a last resort.

Anyone know of a program like SpamSieve that'll work with Thunderbird?

Also, check with your ISP to see what spam filtering they offer. I use my ISP's webmail and its filters are much better than anything I tried to configure under Apple Mail.

Apple's Mail has very basic filtering, what you need is a Bayesian filter combined with the rules you can set, and a predefined white/blacklist of sites, like SpamSieve.
I have to admit that Comcast's filters have been pretty dang good so far, but I wanted a little extra.

I can't, for the life of me, remember what you said I had up my sleeve. Maybe it was the fact that I know two or three mail providers whose spam filters are really good. I like pobox.com where I get my personal mail. The filters are very tuneable. They send me a daily mail with the addresses and subject lines of the suspect mail, which they have held and not delivered. I can mark the false positives, and then they send the mail along to me.

gmail.com is also excellent.

Unfortunately, this probably means changing your address, and that's a pain. The upside is that pobox.com and gmail.com addresses are portable, i.e. not tied to your ISP.

earthlink.net has a service similar to pobox.com's, but I don't think it's as flexible.

Can you switch email clients? If so Thunderbird might be worth a try, it at least lets you setup all kinds of spam filtering rules (from memory)

Tom, I thought you said you had experience setting up spam filters at your job -- as if it was something you did on a regular basis. I vaguely remember when spam came up as a topic and I explained my problem, you said you would take a look to see if you had any insight. Heck, maybe I'm making this up and it's just wishfull thinking. >>Sigh<<

OK, if no one is all that knowledgable about using Apple Mail, how about, is there anyone good at interpretting email headers and can point me in the right direction to figuring out which is the originating mail server? I'm not particularly knowlegable about the basic concepts of email headers and strategies for eradicating spam in general.

Is Apple Mail POP3? If it is, you might want to try popfile, a POP mail proxy that is a bayesian filter. http://popfile.sourceforge.net/

My decaying memory really troubles me. I might have said something like that, and I can't remember.

I am, however, very good at interpreting mail headers. Unfortunately, knowing the originating source is rarely useful nowadays. But I'll interpret a few for you, gladly. Send them to me at noglider@pobox.com

You can still use Apple Mail, but get the server side set up, too. You need server side spam detection to do what you want and you can only have that set up through your ISP.

Verizon is my ISP.

Tom, isn't that what is at the top of this thread? A big list of email headers? Do you remally want me to copy and paste them into an email? I'll gladly do it if that's what you want.

So far it sounds to me like I'm going to have to use another app or another email address. I don't want to use another email address so the front runner is using another app. be it another mail reader (Entourage or Thunderbird) or in addition to Apple Mail like Spam Sieve.

The originating IP addresses in those headers indicates they come from China and Korea. I'd start by blocking out these IP address blocks.
