I'm looking for a set of earbuds that sound great, stay in my ears at the gym and don't cost a fortune. I've seen some of the ones by Shure and Sennheiser but before I plunk down $100 plus dollars on a set I wanted to see if anyone else had any recommendations. The cheap ones I use now are barely able to drown out the bad music playing at the gym. |

I've been using these--they sound really good for fairly cheap. comes with 3 different size earbuds--I was using the larger size buds, but found it actually blocked out TOO MUCH sound (I like to be somewhat aware of my surroundings). switched to the midsize, and it's great for the commute and the gym. Sony Fontopia. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00030CHRQ/ref=noref/103-7254740-0652644?%5Fenc oding=UTF8&s=electronics&v=glance&n=172282 |

RIL, I bought those on a MOL suggestion, and I think they sound ok, BUT I do notice that the bass is lost unless I really shove the things in my ear. ALSO if you are not used to putting things INSIDE your ear, then these might take some getting used to. I also noticed that they fall out of my ears A LOT. I could go to the next bigger size but then I would feel that my ears are FULL to the gills. I mean I don't love the feeling already, it would be worse if I went to the biggest size. But for the price, I will say they sound pretty good. Oh also, one other annoyance, the cord is longer to one ear than the other. Why? I don't know. I find it a bit annoying though. |

No earbuds will sound great. Especially the ones that form a seal with the ear. There needs to be airflow for decent bass. But anyway...the best I have found for working out are the Sony Walkman ones. (really odd looking headphones with the over-the-ear piece) Check them out. They are only about 9.99. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000092YR6/sr=1-61/qid=1153940996/ref=sr_1_61/1 03-7058096-8051065?ie=UTF8&s=electronics Btw, the same bass repsonse issue occurs with noise canceling headphones...the bass is awful. |

I got the Fontopia headphones from a friend who didn't like them--I think a lot of how these (or any headphones) sound depends on the shape of your ear. Looking at the reviews on Amazon, I see it's kind of a love it or hate it thing. Lucky for me, these feel fine and I like the sound. you can wrap the longer cord around the back of your neck--less likely it will get snagged.

Actually the Etymotic Research ones I linked have great bass response and incredibly strong, clean sound. The way it seals in the ear is a crucial part of the sound -- if you hold them to your ear without inserting them they sound extremely tinny and in fact have very low volume. But if you put them in your ear correctly the unit thingy forms an acoustic chamber in your ear which amplifies the sound and rounds it out greatly. These you need to just stick gently in your ear and they hold. Actually if you push them in too far they sound worse, if you have it right they are sort of suspended there. One of the best things about in-ear, sealing types is you don't need to play the volume as loud to get great sound and especially great bass, and that is important to preserve your hearing. It will save some battery life too. The ear bud type phones that come with the iPod are -- I've said it before -- complete crap, and should be replaced immediately.

I'm looking for outer ear ones. I still want great sound, but the inner ones can really damage hearing, I've been using them since I was a teenager, and now that I'm in the city I like knowing what's going on around me when in a subway station or something... any recs for non-bud headphones? Or at LEAST ones that are buds shaped like the regular iPod ones, and not those stick-all-the-way-in-your-ears earplug type ones? |
