Comes with Dantz Retrospect Express, the NAS can be expanded by connecting external USB2 drives to it (over 1 Terabyte), the NAS Finder software provides automatic drive mapping and configuration, comes with free unlimited tech support, has a built in print server, 3 year warranty, RAID 0/1, PC & Mac compatible, but it's not Gigabit Ethernet, it's only 10/100.

I wonder if it's Linux (or Unix) under the hood. The Linksys NSLU2, at about $80, was really popular among hackers because it runs Linux, all on some type of non-volatile RAM. The guy at Tom's Hardware (tomshardware.com) learned how to break in and modify the pseudodisk, and a whole community sprang up and figured out how to use the NSLU2 for many other purposes. One of the first things was to provide NFS as well as CIFS (SMB) file service.

It's also HIPAA compliant,

HIPAA Requirements for Data Management

HIPAA RequirementsSimpleShare Solution
Access Control SimpleShare provides three level of access control to data that can be implemented
Audit Controls SimpleShare allows you to provide detail information about who had access to files
Data Backup Simple Share can be used to backup all of you computers to a single central storage resource
Disaster Recovery SimpleShare can mirror data between multiple disk drives to provide fully redundant copies of files and provide an extra set of data to be stored in a secure offsite location
Secure Data Transfer SimpleShareÕs data encryption capability protects information during transmission over the network or over the web
Data Disposal Not only must data be protected during transfer- it must be disposed of securely as well - SimpleShareÕs encryption feature allows the data/device to be disposed of without compromising file security.

It uses a Broadcom NAS on a chip (which means it supports CIFS/SAMBA, and NFS also), it also uses Java with the latest Firmware http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=29965
Apparently it runs Linux, I don't know what flavor but TomsNetworking has a review of the 250GB model at the time it was running Linux kernel version 2.4.20, the filesystem is Reiser.
Here's a review of the 160GB NAS.
