Does anyone have advice how to stop SPAM (junk FAX documents) from being sent a phone line? I have heard of organization that can be called to assist with TeleMarketing cold-calls. Basically I need to block unwanted access to my phone. Can you provide web site info or someone to call? Thanks in advance. Trent |

Well let me offer this, 2 weeks ago I purchased a unit called a Tele-Zapper. It claimed that it sends a tone back down the line that tells computer based telephone dialing systems that the line has been disconnected. Hummmm! Well for $40 I am giving it a try. So far, 2 weeks, I do not remember getting a call, nor has any one informed me of problems calling my home. At this time I would not endorse this product, but I've not returned it. Radio Shack sells a unit as well. I forgot the name of it. |

The only problem I can see with adding a Tele-Zapper to a fax phone line is that the beep that is given off by the zapper when the line is seized (answered) might throw the sending fax machine off. The Tele-Zapper works by adding a deceptive beep when you answer the call that tells a computer calling the phone that it has been disconneted. Trial and error when using this device on a fax phone line might be needed. PS: The Radio Shack model is also called the Tele-Zapper. The newer model, also called Tele-Zapper is ten dollars cheaper, and considerably smaller. The original units were about the size of a phone answering machine. The newer model is about the size of a medium pickle. |

I just checked, and this is from the Tele-Zapper website FAQ: "Will the TeleZapper work on junk faxes? Yes. If your fax number is dialed by a computerized predictive dialing system that is programmed to listen for disconnected numbers, the TeleZapper will "zap" your fax number from those calling lists" http://www.telezapper.com/default.asp |

Thanks for the advice. As a stop gap I disconnected the fax device for about 2 weeks. Just reconnected about 3 days ago. So far no junk fax to report. In the new year, I think I may try that device (TeleZapper).

I've had a telezapper for about a year (the older, small box kind). After a few weeks, the volume of calls definitely reduced by about 75%. I would definitely recommend it. Another good idea is when someone calls is tell them: "Take me off your call list". They have to comply by this by law. If they call you back you can sue them for $500 each time! |

Tried that ("Take me off your call list") and it does help some. Even after making that statement I have actually had a second and third sales call on the same subject. Again, I expect to try the TeleZapper if the Fax SPAM continues. As of today no new occurance (I am on a roll). Thanks for all the help folks... |

Actually, if you're getting junk faxes (not telemarketing calls), there is a law in place (federal, I believe) that provides for a $500 penalty per instance of an unrequested fax solicitation. I'll try to find a reference. |

Here's a few links (note the authors are mostly attorneys, but the law is linked to at each site) http://www.keytlaw.com/faxes/junkfaxlaw.htm http://www.markwelch.com/faxlaw.htm http://www.junkfax.com/ And on the other side... http://www.lawpsided.com/junkfaxlaw.htm |

Just an update. 6 weeks now with the Telezapper. Only 1 spam call made it thru. I asked and was told that the caller dialed my number, they did not have computers. I did not listen to his pitch, rather I gave him the click. This was the best $40 I ever spent. |
